UNESCO, in partnership with Namibia’s Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture and the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism has launiched a pilot project to boost community - led tourism by fostering cultural entrepreneurship, focusing on women and youth in Maltahöhe, Aus and Ultuseb, localities near the Namib Sand Sea.
Held from 17 – 20 November 2025 and Funded by Saudi Ministry of Culture under the Creating a Sustainable Heritage Ecosystem and the Socio – economic Development in Africa project as part of a broader African initiative, this pilot aims to provide seed funding and training to support community - developed enterprises.
Community proposals tabled at the launch to turn local heritage into sustainable livelihoods included activities like storytelling walks, guided tours, desert – based activities and craft production, informed by a May 2025 needs assessment and a field visit to Rural Revive model in Maltahöhe.
The pilot project now moves into implementation phase with seed funding applications to be issued in the coming weeks, training scheduled for January - February 2026, a mid - project review in March - April 2026, and consolidation in May 2026 to prepare supported enterprises for long - term operations.
This initiative leverages Namibia’s rich heritage and the unique environment of the Namib desert to build economic resilience and preserve culture through sustainable tourism.
