Tomsk, Russia | Researchers of TSU University Created Advanced Materials to Clean Air After Industrial Disasters

Researcher of TSU University located in Tomsk, a city on the Tom River in Siberia, one of the oldest cities in Russia, boasting over four centuries of history, a large cultural, educational, scientific and innovative centre of the Russian Federation, also famous for its monuments of wooden and stone architecture dating from the 18th – 20th centuries have created composite, advanced materials capable of rapidly neutralizing toxic chemical compounds in the air after industrial accidents and technological disasters, according to the university’s official website.

TSU, founded in 1878, the first university in the Asian part of the Russian Federation and, in practice, the first Russian university East of the Volga saw a team of of scientists of its research laboratory has developed two types of advanced materials for air purification.

The first is a composite material with aluminium nanoparticles, metal oxides and biocidal components such as iodine for inactivating biological agents.

Experiments showed that this type of compound can be used in the creation of aerosols to inactivate harmful microorganism and hazardous biological agents present in the atmosphere, thereby reducing their impact on human health and natural ecosystems.

The second scientific breakthrough concerns a new photocatalytic material composed by titanium dioxide and silver nanoparticles for neutralizing toxic chemical compounds and it can break down up to 85% of harmful substances under the action of ultraviolet radiation in under two minutes.

The development of these new compoundes is in charge of the TSU Special and High Energy Materials Research Laboratory, based in the scientific center “New Materials for Special Use”.
