Brazil | Planning to Expand Air Connectivity with South Africa to Boost Tourism and Trade

Brazil, the largest and most populous country in Latin America is planning to expand air connectivity with South Africa to boost tourism and trade as reported by the official website of Brazil’s Ministry of Tourism.

The two country relationship involves significant South - South cooperation, economic ties through a preferential trade agreement between MERCOSUR, a South American trade bloc established in 1991 to promote economic integration and development through a common market and the Southern African Customs Union (SACU), an African economic organization founded in 1910.

Growing investments and diverse cooperations were established particularly during Brazil’s “Lula” administrations, which have prioritized strengthening connections with the Global South and now Brazil and South Africa are set to enhance air links with the introduction of additional flights between the two nations as part of a strategic effort to strengthen bilateral relations and stimulate growth in tourism and trade.

Representatives of the South African airport authority also expressed interest in further expanding air connectivity between the two destinations in the near future, with Brazilian tourism officials pledging their support for the initiative.

The existing air service between Brazil and South Africa consists of eight weekly flights, offering over 2000 seats. The visa exemption for tourists for up to 90 days, applicable to citizens of both countries, serves as an additional incentive for travel.

The number of South African tourists visiting Brazil has tripled from 5.403 in 2022 to 15.280 in 2024, with over 10.000 having visited already in the first half of 2025, while Brazil is the leading source from Latin America to South Africa, with nearly 50.000 Brazilian tourists visiting the African country in 2024, representing a near doubling compared to the previous year.

Germany | Working on a New Tourism Strategy with a Focus on Competitiveness

Germany is reorienting its tourism policy to foster sustainable growth and resilience in its tourism sector, and is working on the future “Die Nationale Tourismusstrategie (NTS)” (National Tourism Strategy) which should focus on the competitiveness covering outgoing, incoming tourism and domestic tourism in the country in a balanced way.

The German government led by Chancellor  Friedrich Merz is developing this new strategy for tourism in the country that according to the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs will replace the current “Die Nationale Platform Zukunft des Tourismus”, (NPZT ), (The National Future of Tourism Platform).

“ Die Nationale Platform Zukunft des Tourismus, (NPZT)” is a dialogue platform established in May 2023 to connect policymakers, industry, and academia, addressing future topics such as climate neutrality, digitalization, and workforce security serving as a central instrument for promoting future - oriented, competitive, and sustainable tourism, and launched projects related to labour acquisition, eco - friendly mobility and connectivity of rural regions among others.

According to the information now released, this platform wlll come to an end at end of 2025. The initiative launched within the platform can be continued independently by the stakeholders even beyond its conclusion.

The networking created by the platform, both within the industry and with the various tourism policy stakeholders within the federal government and the federal levels, should be utilized in the strategic reorientation of the federal government’s tourism policy and also be incorporated into considerations for contemporary tourism policy bodies.

Questions arose, particularly among members of the parliament., from the CDU/CSU, SPD, and Alliance 90, the Greens, regarding the expiration of the “Future of Tourism” platform.

The CDU/CSU wanted to known whether there were any legal hurdles, while the other two parliamentary groups emphasized that the networks that had just been formed could suffer negative consequences if the platform were to be discontinued.

The deputies from the Left and the Greens considered that the end of this platform could weaken the networks created and they also warned that the strategy should not focus exclusively on economic aspects having pointed out problems such as the rental of holiday homes in cities and water scarcity in southern countries, phenomena that increasingly also affect Germany.

In response, the Government representative stressed that, in addition to economic objectives, ecological issues will also be taken into account.

Aside from parliamentary debates, the Tourism Commission decided to hold four public hearings by end of the year :

•    On 25th October 2025 - The situation of the hotel and the restaurant industry.
•    On 5th November 2025 - Cycling and walking tourism, as well the necessary infrastructure .
•    On 12th November 2025 - The economy of holiday home rentals, including the European directive on short - term rentals.
•    On 3rd December 2025 - Themes related to business trips.

Ukraine | Inaugurated its First Railway Line with European Track Width Standard

On 5th September 2025, Ukraine inaugurated its first railway line with European track width standard, making a significant step in integrating the transport network and the country with the European Union.

The project was funded by a €28.6 million package, half from an European Investment Bank (EIB) loan backed by the EU’s €50 billion Ukraine Facility and half from an EU connecting Europe Facility grant.

The 22 kilometres line uses the EU’s 1.435 - millimetre gauge rather than Ukraine’s traditional 1.520 - millimetre broad gauge and the development includes upgraded signalling, communications, and centralized control systems to boost capacity and safety.

The line connects the city of Uzhhorod, a centre on the Uzh River in Western Ukraine, on the border with Slovakia and near the frontier with Hungary to Chop, a city located in Zakarpattia Oblast separated from the Hungarian town of Záhory by the Tisza River and near the Slovak frontier.

The project is one of the tangible results of the Ukraine Facility and by eliminating a break of gauge at the Slovak and Hungarian borders, the route cuts travel times, streamlining movement to relevant cities like Košice in eastern Slovakia, and important European capitals in Central Europe such as Budapest and Vienna.

The new track is also the first phase of a larger plan to extend European - gauge rails deeper into Ukraine to Chernivtsi, Lviv, Kovel, and eventually the capital of the country, Kyiv, over the next several years.

Officials stated that this development will accelerate trade, support reconstruction, and make rail more competitive with road transport.

European Investment Bank - Vice President Teresa Czerwńiska expressed her enthusiasm saying that this is a historic step for the country towards EU integration.

EU Ambassador Katerina Mathernová called the line “a very significant step toward fully integrating Ukraine’s railways with the European network, enabling direct connections with neighbouring member states”.

Head of Ukrainian Railways, Oleksandr Pertsovkyi, noted that the project was completed ahead of schedule despite the war, and he stated that Uzhhorod is now the first centre with a direct European - gauge connection to the European Union capitals. This section will be electrified by 2026 and push the line toward Lviv within three years.

Rail remains for now the most reliable way to reach Ukraine from the rest of the European Union and the project marks an important step toward the country’s future inside the European family-and sets the stage for a broader continental connection.

Isla Mujeres, Mexico | Rehabilitation Started to Reopen the Historic Hacienda Mundaca to Island Visitors

Isla Mujeres, a Mexican island in the Caribbean Sea, 13 kilometres off the coast from Cancún, a popular vacation destination known for its beautiful beaches such as Playa Norte, resorts, hotels and for scuba diving and snorkeling on the surrounding coral reefs will see the rehabilitation of the historic Hacienda Mundaca, a 19th century plantation house located 4 kilometres south of town that will reopen to island visitors.

Mayor Atenea Gómez Ricalde has spearheaded the start of the renovation of this emblematic site stating that the goal is preserving the municipality’ s historical and cultural heritage.

During an event on the Hacienda Mundaca esplanade, the Mayor said that the new project fulfils the commitment to rescue this complex, a site steeped in history and nature which will be added to Isla Mujeres’ tourist attractions, emphasizing that this rehabilitation represents a comprehensive effort to rescue and and conserve invaluable heritage, promoting the identity and pride of the island community.

The Mayor indicated that Hacienda Mundaca, currently in a state of deterioration due to exposure to environmental factors and the passage of time, lacked adequate conditions to safely receive tourists. The renovation will preserve its original structures and recover spaces for recreation and family gatherings.

Hacienda Mundaca is located in the central part of Isla Mujeres, on the way to Garrafon cliff, right by the side of Playa Paraiso and Playa Lancheros and currently, you can see at the southern end stands a gateway with an impressive stone arch at the entrance of the complex, a partially rebuilt house, some walls,  rusty cannons, and a beautiful pond.

The house  formerly called “Hacienda Vista Alegre” is a plantation house build by Fermin Mundaca de Marchega a 19th century Spanish pirate who lived on the Mexican island after years of plundering the Caribbean, fighting against the powerful British navy and trading slaves.

History, narrations and legends tells that once retired the Spanish pirate found in Isla Mujeres a safe place to live, he fell in love with a local young woman called “la Trigueña” (The Brunette)  and to win her he started to develop a two - story mansion with engraved stones, orchard, exotic flowered gardens, and cattle, to live a happy life but when Mundaca was building the hacienda,“la Trigueña” married another islander. The brokenhearted former pirate died, and the hacienda fell into disrepair.

Some documents indicate that Fermin Mundaca de Marchega died during a visit to Mérida, the capital of Mexico’s Yucatán state and was buried there. Others say he died on Isla Mujeres, and indeed there’s a grave in the town cementery that supposedly contains his remains.

The rehabilitation of Hacienda Mundaca includes general cleanup of the area, reconstruction of trails. demarcation of historical elements, rehabilitation of bathrooms,  the open - air theatre and the installation of informational signage. In addition, a wooden birdwatching tower will built, enhancing the Hacienda’s natural and tourist value.

These actions are part of the Annual Investment Program for fiscal year 2025  carried out with funds from the Environmental Sanitation Right and will bring back to life a historic complex that is part of the heritage of Isla Mujeres.
