Ain Sokhna Port, also known as Ain Sukhna, a major international gateway port for Egypt, the Persian Gulf and Asia located at Red Sea on the western coast of the Gulf of Suez, considered the first comprehensive and multipurpose hub port, classified among Third Generation ports to serve export and import operations received a Guinness World Records certificate as the world’s deepest land - based artificial port basin, with a depth of 19 metres.
The record was confirmed by Kanzi El Dafrawy, an official adjudicator in December 2025 as reported by Sada El - Balad, news website and satellite television channel headquartered in Giza.
This major engineering development is part of Egypt’s strategy to develop its maritime infrastructure and transform ports into key logistics centres connecting the Red Sea and Mediterranean, integrating them into major international trade corridors, leveraging its strategic location for transit and logistics, accommodating world’s largest ships, and solidifying Egypt’s role as a global trade hub.
As part of the Ain Sokhna upgrade, five new basins were excavated to depths of up 19 metres, alongside extensive dredging works, new quays, breakwaters, internal roads, and a railway network integrated into Egypt’s multimodal transport system, including the high - speed electric rail like.
These upgrades aim to reduce logistic costs and improve cargo handling efficiency and represent an achievement that highlights Egypt’s strategy to strengthen its position as a regional transport and logistic hub of notable relevance.
Several Egyptian engineers and more than 200 Egyptian national companies contributed to the project with the goal to transform Ain Sokhna into a central port on the Red Sea and a key gateway for Egypt’s eastern coast supporting trade, export and import operations.
Another pillar of the strategy involves partnerships with leading global terminal operators ans shipping lines to boost maritime terminals efficiency, attract more vessels and expand transit trade through Egyptian ports.
Republic’s Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and transport Kamel Al - Wazir said that Ain Sokhna Port's development aligns with directives from President Abdel Fattah El - Sisi to capitalise on Egypt’s strategic location on the Red Sea and the Mediterranean, as well as the global importance of the Suez Canal.
The Minister added that the project forms part of the Ministry of Transport’s comprehensive maritime development strategy under Egypt vision 2030.
