China | Successfully Carried out the First Flight of an Autonomous Transport Aircraft at Mid - Altitude

China has successfully carried out the first flight of an autonomous transport aircraft at mid - altitude, completing the maiden flight of the Tianma - 1000, developed by China North Industries Group (Norinco), an economical transport platform adapted to mountainous terrain and multiple roles, including cargo transport, rescues operations, emergency response, and logistics services.

The Tianma – 1000 (“Celestial Horse – 1000”) equipped with AI - Powered navigation and autonomous loading/unloading, can fly up to 8.000 metres high, take off and land in less than 200 metres, reach a range of 1.800 kilometres and carry up to 1 ton of cargo. 

Its advantages include ultra - short takeoffs and landings, rapid switching between modes of transport and the possibility of dropping supplies from the air. In a single flight the Tianma - 1000 can carry enough food, medicine and equipment for several days, thus offering an efficient solution for transporting cargo to remote sites or areas of emergency operations. 

Key Features of the Tianma - 1000: 

•    Performance: Operates up to 8.000 metres, flies 1.800 kilometres range, carries 1 ton payload and needs <200 metres for takeoff/landing. 
•    Autonomous Capabilities: Equipped with AI for intelligent route planning, obstacle avoidance, and high – precision autonomous landings even in low visibility (rain, snow, fog). 
•    Versatility: Designed for rugged areas, disaster relief, emergency response, and complex terrain, functionating in both civilian logistics and dual – use scenarios. 
•    Infrastructure Independence: Can use non – paved surfaces like dirt roads or grass, reducing reliance on traditional airports. 
•    Automated Cargo Handling: Features an intelligent system for autonomous loading/unloading of cargo within minutes, reducing manpower and turnaround time. 
•    Modular Design: A flexible cargo bay allows conversion for different missions, including airdrop capabilities. 

This aircraft marks a significant step in China’s development of unmanned logistics, offering a safer and more efficient alternative to traditional transport in challenging environments.
