Malaysia’s airports are experiencing record strong passenger growth ahead of 2026, with 2025 data showing a 11.2% year - on - year increase to 153.3 million total passengers across its network, signalling robust recovery, setting a strong foundation for Visit Malaysia 2026, a massive, year - long national campaign aiming to attract 47 million tourists through culture, heritage, and diverse travel experiences.  

This notable performance is driven by rising international and domestic demand, key enhancements include improved capacity, new airline partnerships, rising international connectivity and steady growth in domestic routes, reinforcing recovery momentum. 

Transport authorities expect this positive trend to continue into 2026, supported by improved air connectivity, tourism recovery and regional economic growth. The performance of the Aviation sector is also expected to contribute positively to the wider economy, particularly tourism, trade and services.

December 2025 alone saw a record 10 million passengers, an increase of 15.5% compared with the month a year earlier. Officials attributed this surge to seasonal travel demand, expanded flight schedules and the continued return of long - haul services. 

KL International Airport (KLIA), as main international gateway handled over 6 million passengers during the perod, marking an increase of nearly 11% year - on - year. The Malaysian airport handled 63.3 million passengers in the entire 2025, bolstered by rising international and domestic travellers. 

The steady rise in traffic is seen as an indicator of renewed airline confidence and growing passenger demand. 

Authorities noted that international passenger traffic accounted for a significant share of the increase and domestic travel also continued to expand supported by improving consumer confidence and higher mobility across key economic centres, underlying Malaysia’s strengthening position as regional air transport hub.

•    Technology and Infrastructure: Implementation of self - service baggage drops, biometric facial recognition for boarding, and improved queue management to reduce congestion. 
•    Service Quality: Focus on upgrading retail outlets and enhancing overall terminal infrastructure to improve Skytrax and Airport Council International (ACI) rankings.
