Paraguarí, Paraguay | Inaugurated the First Section of the “Sendas del Tren” that will be the Longest Cycle Path in South America

Paraguarí, a city, district and capital of Paraguarí Department in Paraguay, located on the southern slopes of the forested extension of the Brazilian Highlands, including the Cordillera de los Altos, 66 kilometres from the country’s capital, Asunción, inaugurated the first section of the “Sendas del Tren”, a project which is transforming Paraguay’s disused historic railway line into the longest cycle path in South America. 

The Paraguarí Train Station was the scene of this strategic initiative that is committed to the recovery of the old Paraguayan railway line integrating tourism, sustainable mobility, and historical heritage, marking a significant milestone for promoting sustainable tourism and local development.

The event was attended by the Minister of Tourism, Angie Duarte, the Deputy Ambassador of Germany in Paraguay, Jörg Herrera, the Governor of the Department of Paraguarí, Norma Zarate, the Municipal Mayor of the city of Paraguarí, Marcelo Simbrón, representatives of international cooperation and the project’s driving team. 

The National Secretariat of Tourism (Senatur) reaffirmed the institutional support for this iniative, understanding tourism as a tool of identity and opportunities for local development. 

The Sendas del Tren Project

•    Goal: To revitalize the former railway corridor, which spans over 420 kilometres from Asunción to Encarnación, into a multi – purpose trail primarily for cycling and walking. 
•    Location: the first phase connects Paraguarí and Cerro León, located about 70 kilometres from the capital city, Asunción.
•    Features: The project involves clearing the old tracks, laying gravel, and installing bridge structures, railings, signage, rest stops, and informational areas that blend natural surroundings with cultural elements. 
•    Benefits: It aims to boost domestic and international tourism, strengthen local identity, stimulate regional economies, and offer new eco – friendly experiences to visitors while preserving historical heritage. 
•    Development Model: The initiative is privately funded and supported by the National Secretariat of Tourism (Senatur) and German – owned company Cartones Yaguareté, emphasizing sustainability and international cooperation. 

During the event, the Minister of Tourism highlighted the value of articulated work and the impact that this type of initiative generates in the territory. 

This project positions Paraguarí as an emerging hub for active and sustainable tourism, making the country’s rich railway history accessible, in a new, environmentally conscious way.
