Aswan, an iconic city on the Nile River, southern Egypt’s strategic and commercial gateway since antiquity, home to some most fascinating archaeological sites like the Philae temple complex, on Agilkia island near the landmark Aswan Dam, has been designated as the “Tourist City of the Year” for 2026 by the D - 8 Econmic Cooperation Organization, an intergovernmental organization established in 1997 fostering economic development and tourism among Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Turkey, and Azerbaijan.
According to Daily News Egypt, Aswan obtained a majority of votes from member states, achieving a recognition for the second consecutive year, in a competition with three nominated cities from Azerbaijan, Iran and Pakistan, a success that highlighs the role of the Egyptian city as a strategic, historic gateway between Africa and the Middle East.
The city was awarded as best tourist destination for its rich cultural heritage, archaeological significance, year - round tourism, including Nile Cruises, and therapeutic tourism. This award also highlights Aswan as a premier destination for history and nature, featuring the Abu Simbel temples, Philae Temple, and the High Dam.
The selection process included a coordinated effort between Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, which submitted a detailed file with information on the city’s tourism infrastructure, assets and attractions and this distinction highlights Aswan’s historical and cultural position as a major tourism destination.
Key features and attractions of Aswan recognized by the D - 8 Organization include:
• Ancient Monuments: The Philae Temple, the Unfinished Obelisk, Kalabsha Temple, and the Tombs of the Nobles.
• Nubian Culture: Vibrant Colourful Nubian villages, the Nubian Museum, and authentic Nubian hospitality.
• Natural and Scenic Beauty: The Nile River, Elephantine Island, Aswan Botanical Garden on Kitchener’s Island, and the Nile’s cataract.
• Modern Engineering and Safari: The Aswan High Dam and Lake Nasser, alongside desert safari adventures.
• Specialized Tourism: Known for therapeutic tourism, birdwatching, and as a winter sun resort.
With this designation, the flow of tourists travelling to Aswan, especially from D – 8 member countries, is expected to increase significantly today and in the coming years.
