A pilot project to expand the use of biofuel (palm – based B20 biodiesel) in airport service vehicles is underway in Malaysia, This initiative aims to reduce carbon emissions and support the country’s goal of achieving net - zero emissions by 2050.
The Malaysian Palm Oil Authority (MPOB) is conducting discussions with ground vehicle operators to introduce at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), as part of the biofuel program expansion initiative (B20) transitioning from the current B10 blend.
According to Malaysia’s Ministry of Agriculture and Commodities, the plan calls for extending the use of the biofuel to ground service vehicles to other airports nationwide, including Seani Internationa Airport in Johor Bahru the country as reportd by Bernama, a news agency linked to the Malaysian government.
Deployment at these airports will depend of the results of the pilot project currently underway in Kuala Lumpur, as well as the approval of funding, the availability of infrastructure and the logisitical preparation necessary for its implementation.
Key Details of the Initiative:
• Expansion Scope: The program increases the biofuel mix in ground vehicles (luggage conveyors, loaders) from 10% (B10) to 20% (B20) palm - based methyl ester.
• Implementation and Partners: Led by Malaysian Palm Oil (MPOB), the 18 - month pilot involves PETRONAS Dagangan Bhd, Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd, and Teras Kembang Sdn Bhd.
• Location and Future Expansion: The pilot project is currently at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), with plans to expand to other airports like Senai International Airport in Johor if successful.
• Goal: The move align with the National Agri Commodity Policy 2021 - 2030, targeting a B30 mandate for the transport sector, while strengthening Malaysia position in sustainable aviation.
• Broader Application: Similar trials are being conducted at key ports such as North Port Klang, Tanjung Pelepas, Johor Port, and Kuching Port.
This expansion represents a significant step in reducing reliance on fossil fuels and promoting sustainable practices within the Malaysian aviation industry, while also supporting local palm oil producers.
