Beijing is rapidly integrating the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in schools with new educational programs include new curricula, textbooks and the use of new AI - powered tools covering 87.7% of the city’s primary and secondary educational institutions.
This initiative is part of a broader strategy with the aim to foster innovation, personalize learning, improve teaching efficiency by using AI for grading, tutoring, and lesson preparation, targeting comprehensive AI literacy by 2030.
As part of this strategy, an intelligent platform and digital marketplace of AI applications for education was created. In addition, 50 model schools and 32 higher education institutions with best practices in artificial intelligence were established.
The Chinese city also launched innovative projects in the AI sector, of which 25 have been recognized by the Ministry of Education as models at the national level.
Schools are actively using AI tools in classrooms. One of the main goals of this implementation is to help teachers monitor student progress and improve interaction between students.
Local authorities stress that the schools will focus their efforts on perfecting safety measures, placing greater emphasis on creating an effective model of synergy between humans and machines.
Key Aspects of Beijing’s AI Education Initiative:
• Mandatory Curriculum: AI education becomes compulsory, with courses covering basic concepts, robotics, and machine learning.
• Grade - Level Focus: Primary students (around age 6) will start with hands – on AI activities, while older students study algorithms, data, and AI applications.
• Implementation Methods: Schools can create independent AI courses or integrate topics into science and IT curricula.
• Structural Support: Over 60 model schools are established to demonstrate best practices, including the use of AI platforms and digital marketplaces.
• Goal: To improve learning quality, enhance student – teacher interaction, and foster generation ready for a “smart society”.
Deputy Director of Beijing’s Municipal Education Commission, Zhang Yaotian, said that these initiatives have produced practical achievements that are internationally competitive and nationally leading.
