The Presidium of the Council of Ministers of Belarus has identified a national gastronomic tradition as its grated potato dishes that could be included into UNESCO’s List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity as reported by BelTA, Belarus’ largest news agency.
The Belarusian Ministry of Culture will send the proposal to UNESCO by end of March 2026. The government noted that this move will help expand information about Belarus as a country where national cultural and culinary traditions are preserved, as well as increasing the country’s tourist appeal and develop gastronomy tourism.
This is the historical and value proposition: “Shredded potato dishes: preparation and consumption traditions in Belarus”, which includes traditional dishes such as:
• Draniki: Traditional Belarusian shallow - fried potato pancakes made from grated raw potatoes, onion, eggs, and flour. Known for being crispy and golden - brown, this beloved comfort food is often served with sour cream. The Draniki is a quick, budget - friendly dish, similar to Ukrainian deruny or potato latkes, commonly enjoyed for breakfast or as a side.
• Babka Ziemniaczana: A savory Belarusian comfort food made from raw grated raw potatoes, sautéed onions, smoky bacon, lardons or salt pork and eggs, baked into a golden - brown casserole, known for its creamy, fluffy interior and crisp exterior, often nicknamed “Bulbyanaya grandmother” or linked to Jewish kugel.

Since 2022, grated potato dishes have been included in the State List of Historical Cultural Values of Belarus, with more than 370 bearers of this tradition registered in 73 districts and 235 different folk recipes.
