Malaysia | Social Media Fuels Rapid Growth of “Durian Tourism” in the Country

Social media fuels a rapid growth and boom in Malaysia’s “durian tourism” the pungent fruit into a major luxury agroturism draw, particularly between June and August Tourism Malaysia has launched 62 dedicatd tour packages featuring orchard visits, gourment tasting, and upscale camping (glamping) to satisfy global demand, notably from China, that established itself as the world’s largest importer of durian.

The country is experiencing a growing phenomenon of “durian tourism” with international visitors, organizing short getaways and day trips around the peak production seasons and visiting the most recognized producing areas.

According to a report by a data company, travellers are looking to taste varieties in their place of origin, learn about sorting methods and visit orchards that have become destinations in themselves, as reported by Bernama, a news agency linked to the Malaysian government.

While regional durian travel isn’t new, with decades of tradition among Singaporean tourists, for example, social media has amplified this trend, especially on Chinese platforms, where how - to guides and the visa - free regime have boosted the appeal of travelling to Malaysia specifically to eat the fruit.

The report highlights that China has established itself as the global’s largest importer of durian by value, concentrating about 95% of global demand. In 2025, the Asian country imported $7.500 million in durian with Thailand and Vietnam as the main suppliers.

However, Malaysian durian is considered of the highest quality and fetches significantly higher prices on the Chinese market, while Thai durian is quoted at $4,239 per ton and Vietnamese at $3,739, Malaysian durian is quoted at $12,138 per tonne.

The introduction of visa waivers for Chinese and Indian nationals has stimulated demand in price - sensitive segments, while improved air connectivity, with Kuala Lumpur as a hub for Malaysia Airlines and Air Asia, benefited both established destinations such as Langkawi,, Penang and emerging areas in East Malaysia.

With the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign at the heart of a coordinated marketing strategy, airline partnerships and digitalisation of broader processes, the country is looking to convert regional demand into longer stays and increased tourism spending also with these attractive proposals like “Durian Tourism”.
