Luxi, China | A Team of Scientists Discovered a Fossil of a Bony Fish, which Lived about 244 million Years Ago

A team of Chinese scientists had discovered the fossils of a new species of bony fish, which lived about 244 million years ago.

The fossi wasl found in Luxi County, a karst - landscape destination located in Honghe Hani and Yi Autononomous Prefecture, within Yuman province, renowned for the spectacular Alu Ancient Cave, a rich blend of Yi and Hani ethnic culture, traditional villages like Chenzi Village, and characterized by a temperate weather.

This new species of bony fish with radiated fins, called Ptycholepis hucae, is the first record in China and the oldest known fossil of this genus globally, according to Global Times.

This extinct species of ray - finned fish is part of the Ptycholepiformes order, often characterized by a fusiform (spindle shaped) body, distinct longitudinally striated (ridged) ganoid scales, and a forward - positioned dorsal fin. These fish typically feature small teeth, large, striated skull bones, and elongate, horizontal suborbital bones.

The specimen, measuring 27.5 centimetres differs from other species of the genus by the skull, gill bones, and the structure of the pectoral fins and this finding advances the oldest known record in Europe by two million years.

The find expands knowledge about the  geological range and  distribution of the genus,  consolidating the region as an important focus of aquatic vertebrates of the Triassic, the first period of the Mesozoic Era, bringing the Permian mass extinction and the Jurassic period.

A researcher at the Institute of Vertebrated Palaeontology and Paleonanthropology, Xu Guanghui, stressed that after the discovery in 2022 of the marine reptile Honghesaurus longicaudalis in Luxi, the region there arelevant focus for studying aquatic vertebrated.
