Tashkent, Uzbekistan | Moving Forward with a $2.5 Billion Project to Build a New, Major International Airport

Uzbekistan is moving forward with a $2.5 billion project to build a new, major international airport in the Tashkent region to replace the current capacity – constrained facility.

The information was released by the country’s Deputy Minister of Transport, Jasurbek Choriev according news agency Kazinform.

The project is a public - private partnership involving Vision Invest from Saudi Arabia, Sojitz Corporation from Japan and Incheon International Airport Corporation from South Korea.

Construction is scheduled to begin in June 2026, with final PPP agreement for signing in mid - May 2026, after that, the project must receive final approval according to the country’s Deputy Minister of Transport.

The new airport will be developed on 1.300 hectares within the Urta Chiechiq and Kuyi Chiechiq districts, approximately 7 km east of Yangiyul in the Taskent region.

The airports will include 14 jet bridges, high - speed rail links, and toll highway connections with an initial capacity for 20 million passengers annually and 129.000 tonnes of cargo per year with 30 takeoffs/landings per hour in its first phase and the future air hub will utilize renewable energy sources.

The existing Tashkent Islam Karimov International Airport is expected to close once the new facility becomes operational.

The development is a response to skyrocketing passenger traffic at the existing airport, which has tripled in the last eight years to 9 million per years.
