India | To Launch its First Hydrogen - Powered Train

India will launch its first hydrogen – power train, a major step towards green and sustainable transportation for the Asian nation, joining the group of countries, developing hydrogen rail transport.

Indian Railways has approved the introduction of a 10 - car Hydrogen Fuel Cell - based trainset on the dedicated Jind - Sonipat section of Northern Railway in the state of Haryana,  as reported by Asian News Service (IANS), a private Indian news agency based in New Delhi.

The project is led by the Ministry of Railways and manufactured by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) as part of a broader Rs 2.800 crore national initiative to develop 35 hydrogen fuel - cell based trains. This aligns with India’s push for sustainable, green transportation to replace diesel counterparts.

The route will link Jind, historic city and administrative headquarters in the Indian state of Haryana, known as the “Heart of Haryana” due to its central location and deep mythological roots, located about 125 kilometres northwest of Delhi and serving as an important agricultural and cultural hub to Sonipat, a rapidly growing industrial and educational hub situated just 28 km north of Delhi,  famous for its rich history and strategic National Capital Region (NCR) location, boasting robust infrastructure, thriving higher education, renowned roadside dining, and strong highway connectivity.

The train that will operate on the Broad Gauge boasts a powerful 2.400 KW (1.200kW  × 2)  propulsion system, it can reach a maximum operational speed of 110 km per hour  running up to 180km on a single hydrogen charge using 369 kg of hydrogen, producing zero CO₂ emissions, with the only byproduct being harmless water vapor and this makes it an environmentally friendly alternative to diesel and other traditional forms of propulsion.

Equipment has been installed that compresses hydrogen and supplies it to the train for refuelling. In addition the necessary technical support  and critical spare parts have been provided to ensure uninterrupted operation, as well as a backup compressor unit is in place.

Safety sensors, including hydrogen leak and flame detection, have been placed in the facilities. Operation and maintenance manuals for the train and the hydrogen station have been drawn up. During the launch phase, the train will be accompanied by trained specialists.

The Railway Ministry’s statement said that the project support India’s national goals for clean energy and zero carbon emissions.
