MONTREAL - CANADA- THE CAPTIVATING AND APPEALING BEAUTY OF QUEBEC.

Economic centre of Quebec, located at the confluence of the St. Lawrence and Ottawa rivers surrounded by at least 70 islands, most of which are uninhabited, the beautiful and cosmopolitan city of Montreal offers visitors a wide range of attractions. The city is Canada's principal port and an industrial centre, commercial and cultural focal point of this Francophone Canadian State. Montreal hosts the largest Francophone community in the world after Paris and it is very much influenced by a strong and distinctive French culture.

The city stands out as the Canadian urban centre with the highest number of bilingual  population.Multi-ethnic charm in the "Metropole," as the French call Montreal,a vibrant City life, friendly, has been designated by UNESCO "City of Design" in 2006, only North American city and third in the world after Buenos Aires and Berlin to receive this prestigious title. Fun, joy of life that is the motto of the city, catching and dramatic. Neighbourhoods like the Village are real concentrations of the fun that alternate with that of Mont Royal crowded with small libraries and artists, or the Chinese bounded by two arcs coloured. But above all, art galleries and design alternatives in the Village, in the tourist part of Old Montreal and quite experimental in Golden Square Mile, while the more scientific focus in the Olympic Stadium that hosted the Games in 1976, with the tallest inclined tower in the world and the island of Sainte-Helene, where stands the Biosphere at the Expo 67 presented to the public as part of the American pavilion, now a museum interpreting the St. Lawrence River.A mix of glass and steel skyscrapers appear behind ancient buildings and large public areas such as the International District, setting of modern urban space adjacent to the old city, home to buildings like the Palais des Congres de Montreal, the Convention Centre, with its glass colored in the interior of which the light of the day turns the floor in a real kaleidoscope. Walking through buildings with stone facades and glass extends up to ICAO headquarters with the Tour de la Bourse, the towering skyscraper work of designers Luigi Moretti and Pier Luigi Nervi still considered a masterpiece of the international style of design.

The first human settlements date back to Montreal in about 2000 years before the arrival of Europeans. The Island hosted some native tribes including the Algonquin, the Hurons and the Iroquois, but their population was poor. It was only in 1535 that a French explorer named Jacques Cartier arrived in the village of Hochelega and claimed the San Lorenzo Valley in the name of France.Another French explorer, Samuel de Champlain visited the area in 1605 and noticed that many of the Iroquois tribes had left the San Lorenzo Valley. This was perhaps due to diseases brought by Europeans and some fighting between the tribes. Champlain continued building a permanent French settlement in Quebec City and founded an outpost for trade in leather on the Island of Montreal at La Place Royale.

The city developed slowly since the Iroquois resisted foreign influences and tried to defend their land. In 1639, a French tax collector named Jérôme Le Royer obtained the title of Seigneurial Island of Montreal and established the first European settlement recognised. It was built a church and Roman Catholic missionaries tried to convert the locals.

The city was known by the name of Ville Marie became a centre for trade in leather and a base from which the French explorers ventured into other parts of North America. The city suffered constant attacks by the Iroquois until a peace treaty was signed in 1701. Montreal continued to be a French colony until 1760, when the Marquis de Vaudreuil-Cavagnal surrendered to the British during the French and Indian War. The locals continued to live in the city submitted to the British Empire.Montreal recorded in 1832 as a city and enjoyed a period of rapid development. This was partly due to the opening of the Lachine Canal, which allowed ships to avoid the Lachine Rapids unnavigable and, therefore, linked the port of Montreal with the foreign market. The development of the city was also helped by the construction of Victoria Bridge, which transformed the city into an important railway centre. The economic boom attracted even more immigrants English and French and British groups became almost equal in magnitude. Montreal overcame Quebec City as the leading political and financial, and became the largest city in British North America and the cultural centre of Canada. It became the capital of the United Provinces in 1844 and held this position for five years until a mob opposed to the approval of the Act for damages caused by the Rebellion and burned the Parliament building.

The 2nd war had little effect on the city, except for the Conscription Crisis of 1944, when Mayor Houde Camillien urged residents to ignore the government's policy concerning the registration of all men and women. The government was forced to intervene and put Houde in a prison camp and put in place the draft. In the seventies arose other social issues, mainly regarding the concern of the French-Canadian population with respect to the preservation of their traditions and their language. The election of a separatist party had a great impact both politically and culturally, and many Montrealers of British origin if they left the city. Was introduced an act which established French as the language used in business communications and public signals.Growth was slow during the eighties and early nineties, before increasing again towards the end of the century. Today the economy is healthy and Montreal has attracted new businesses and a steady stream of foreign visitors.

An orderly visit of the city centre can be started from the "Dorchester Square" and  "Place du Canada"(Canada Square) it is a large urban complex of two adjacent square in downtown Montreal. These two green squares in the centre of the city are considered as the "social meeting point" of Montreal citizens,to have a drink or a pic-nic under the trees and often place for open-air concerts.Dorchester Square, originally called as "Dominion Square" was Canada’s wealthiest neighbourhood at the end of the 19th century; its monuments and surrounding buildings are emblematic of the history of Canada and Montreal. The history of Dorchester Square started when it was built between 1876 and 1880 upon  an old cemetery where more than 50,000 human remains are still buried.

Place du Canada, part of Dominion Square until 1967,it was developed along with the adjacent Dorchester Square between 1872 and 1876. The 14.000 square-metres has a varied topography resulting from a slope towards De la Gauchetière Street. Here you can see many commemorative statues and monuments such as the dramatic monument to the dead of the Boer War,the monument of Sir John A. McDonald, Canada's first prime minister, the work is by English sculptor George Edward Wade. The two cannons flanking the monument were used at Sebastopol in the Crimean War of 1855 and were a gift from Queen Victoria to the City of Montréal in 1892, to mark the 250th anniversary of the founding of the City.Other statues are in honour of  Sir Wilfrid Laurier, Canada's first French-speaking prime minister, Scottish poet Robert Burns and  "The cenotaph"  a replica monument of the Cenotaph in Whitehall, located in the City of Westminster in London. The cenotaph commemorates three wars in which Canada played a role.

On both sides of Boulevard René Lévesque, instead of the old Catholic cemetery .To his right, at  Rue Metcalfe stands the "Sun Life building". This magnificent building in "Beaux-Arts" style is without a doubt the jewel of Downtown Montréal.It occupies the entire east side of Dorchester Square and it is Headquarters of Sun Life Insurance Company, the building could accommodate up to 2,500 employees and was advertised as "the tallest building in the British Empire." Its construction and subsequent expansion contributed to the reputation of Montreal as the largest financial city in those years. During the Second World War, the British government has stashed here its Treasury bills and gold reserves. Today, there are still the administrative offices of Sun Life and other prestigious companies and insurance brokerage.

This emblematic building is a symbol of Montreal,in 1913 the city needed to build some historical landmarks, one of them is the "Sun Life"completed in 1931. The exterior and interior of the building is stunning representing an architectonic masterpiece of modern art,122 meters tall,  Between 1923 and 1933, of major expansion for adding a tower with the number of floors to 26 floors and will claim the same as the largest building of the British Empire. It is impressive the material needed to build the "Sun life".It required 500,000 cubic feet of granite, iconsisting in 60,200 granite blocks, 2 to 17 tons each, for a total mass of 43 000 tons.

The building is decorated with 114 drums of columns in granite, which weighs all of 5443 tons, and placed end to end would total 4,700 linear feet. Inside you can see an extensive use of marble, including  black marble from Belgium, Italian marble Tavernelle Rose and pink salmon from Tennessee.Today the major part of the building host offices. At his feet lies the main shopping street of the city, the "Rue Sainte-Catherine"(St.Catherine Street), and the McGill College Avenue likened to the Champs Elysees in Paris. One block south is the complex of the "Place Ville Marie"(Mary´s town Square), whose construction in the late 50s introduced modern architecture and the beginning of the underground city that today has over 30 kilometers long and connected to the most tube stations and all the main areas of importance.

The Montreal underground well known as NMR is another attraction in the city. Began construction in the late 50s at the request of Mayor Jean Drapeau, as a remedy to withstand the frigid Canadian winters.Today is the largest underground city in the world and consists of 33 km of tunnels connecting downtown metro ten stations, seven large hotels and many office buildings and shopping centres in 41 blocks of 12 km ². Other areas of the city also have smaller tunnel systems that connect the main buildings with underground stations.About 500,000 people use every day such systems, which are opened more than 2,000 stores and department stores, 40 cinemas, 2 large railway stations, restaurants and numerous car parks and public buildings. There are even underground apartments and houses that keep out the outside, getting natural light through skylights and glass roofs. The setting is complete with fountains and artificial lakes, theatres, gardens and even an amusement park. For many citizens is the only city for almost 5 months a year in which the outside temperature is usually up to -20 ° C.

.At the corner of  "Boulevard René Lévesque" and "Rue Mansfield" is " Cathédrale Marie Reine du Monde"(Mary Queen of the World Cathedral) you can compare this religious temple as a reduced replica of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome and Declared a National Historic Site of Canada.Built in the 19th century in Roman style, completed in 1894 the roof is adorned with 13 statues of Montreal’s patron saints. The main altar is is a copy of Bernini’s altar made for St. Peter´s in Rome and was cast in copper and gold.

At "Rue de la Gauchetière-Atrium", rises, the head of the skyline of the city, an office building of 51 storeys high, housing, among other things,a large ice rink. Going back two blocks to the north reaches the old "Gare Windsor", built in Romanesque style in 1889 by architect Bruce Price and currently unused, as well as the adjoining Bell Centre, known as the Molson Centre in 1909, "Avenue des Canadiens"is home of the local Ice hockey team the "Canadiens"playing in the legendary "Bell Centre",in Canada ice hockey is the National Sport.  Montreal has one of the most charming "old town" of North America.Limited by "Le Vieux Port" the Old Harbour,"Rue Saint-Jacques, "Rue Berri" and "Rue McGill" and represented by the esplanade of the "Champ de Mars".The historical heart of the city was once enclosed by imposing stone walls erected in the early 18th century. In the 19th century. it has an important urban development and  began to expand its space and its inhabitants moved outside the walls. Warehouses and commercial buildings gradually replaced the stone houses and gardens and the area fell into decline. The district has been rehabilitated in the '60s, when the houses of the 18th century. Many survivor buildings have been restored, the warehouses converted into flats and new shops and restaurants have opened. Today, Old Montreal is a pretty area that appeals especially to locals and tourists. The "Hôtel de Ville",the Town is the emblematic symbol of the Old Town of course. It was the first important building in Quebec to adopt the "Second Empire style"a kind of Majestic Neoclassic, was built between 1872 and 1878. Following a fire in 1922, the building was rebuilt by Joseph Omer Marchand, who retained the original walls, but added a plan.Historically this place became famous when French General Charles de Gaulle made his famous speech "Long live free Quebec" in 1967 from the balcony overlooking the main entrance. Just inside the front door stand two sculptures, bronzes obtained by fusion of the original, The Sower, and Woman with a bucket of Alfred Laliberté. The elegant main hall is long 31 meters and 12 wide, decorated with marble floors and walls, and a huge bronze chandelier that weighs over a ton. The Council Chamber can be explored if there are meetings underway. Its windows decorated reproduce various aspects of city life in the '20s.Located just opposite the town hall is the  "Musèe du Chateau Ramezay"(The Museum of the Castle Ramezay) this residence low and wide built in 1705 with natural stone is a delightful example of early domestic architecture of the 18th century. Designed by Claude de Ramezay, 11th Governor of Montreal during the French kingdom, the building has undergone several changes but remains relatively faithful to its original appearance. Acquired by the British government to act as the official residence until 1849, was restored and converted into a museum in 1895. The internal evidence of the economic history, and social, politic life of Montreal. The hand-carved mahogany paneling was manufactured in Nantes, France, in 1725.

Have a lovely walk in "Rue St.Paul"along the "Rue Notre-Dame", this narrow street is one of the oldest in Montreal. Its curves and angles can be explained due to its origins as a path along the river that connected the fort hospital. In 1672,Dollier de Casson straightened somewhat the way in his formal plan of the city and renamed it in honor of Paul de Chomedey, Sieur de Maisonneuve. Currently, lovely buildings of the 19th century. Here is "Le Marché  Bonsecours" originally built to accommodate the first covered market in the city, this building dated1845 occupies the site where stood the Intendant's Palace, destroyed in 1796. At the north end of the square,in "Place de la Dauversière"a statue of Horatio Nelson  commemorates the victory of the British general at Trafalgar.

"Maison Papineau"(Papineau House) is another historical building of the Old Town. This large building dated 1785 which has a steeply sloped roof with two rows of dormer windows and a large door that opens onto the courtyard. It is a typical and traditional example of the style in vogue under French rule. The building was rebuilt in 1831 in neoclassical style and was inhabited by six generations of the Papineau family, including Louis-Joseph Papineau head of the Party of Patriots of Quebec, who lived here for various periods between 1814 and 1837.

Another symbol of Montreal in the Old town is the "Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours". The Neo-Gothic Basilica of Notre-Dame dedicated to the Virgin Mary, most Montrealers call the chapel the "Église des Matelots" (the Sailors' Church). This very charming chapel derives its name from the sailors who left behind votive lamps in the shapes of ships in thanksgiving for safe passage. The restored interior has stained-glass windows and paintings depicting key moments in the life of the Virgin Mary. Next to the church is the "Musée Marguerite-Bourgeoys" relates the story of Montréal’s first teacher and the founder of the Congregation of Notre-Dame order of nuns.Very interesting to visit is  the crypt with  artifacts dating back 2000 years and foundations of the original chapel from 1773.From the tower you can enjoy a marvellous view of the Port and the Old Town. "Place d'Armes" is another highlight of the Old Montreal with the statue to the city's founder, Paul de Chomedey, added in 1895. Continue two blocks to the west, the World Trade Centre, a complex of modern buildings among which shows a section of the Berlin Wall, and the Victoria Square, home of the Montreal Stock Exchange and the monument to Queen Victoria,a work by sculptor Marshall Wood.

In the "Vieux Port"the old Port which begins below stands the "tour de l'Horloge"(Watch Tower) erected in 1922 as a memorial to the sailors who died in the 1st War, emerging several rides and entertainment venues as the Museum of Urban Art or the Centre des sciences de Montréal,here you can also enjoy an IMAX theater with multimedia and interactive attractions. From the port many ferries leave the "Île Sainte-Hélène" and "Parc Jean-Drapeau", recreational island with lakes and green areas, you can visit " Le Ronde" an amazing amusement park  and the U.S. Pavilion of the Expo'67, known as Biosphère in 160 Chemin Tour de l'Isle Île Sainte- Hélène, site of the only museum on the environment in Canada. The Stewart Museum contains an exhibition about the exciting discovery of the New World, with scientific instruments and charts. In the neighbouring island of Notre-Dame artificial leisure gathers in the Casino-on "1 Avenue du Casino" is open 24 hours, and the Grand Prix circuit in Canada.

Along the river is the Old Customs House, built in 1836 to house the first British customs in Canada Above, the neoclassical facade of the building overlooking the "Place Royale"(Royal Square). In front of the Place d'Youville is the old pumping station Youville. Here is also the "Musèe d'histoire et archéologie"(History nad Archeologic Museum)Opened in 1992, this museum complex depicts the fascinating history of Montreal since its inception. The  visitors can watch an exciting multimedia presentation.Temporary exhibitions are staged on the second floor and from the viewpoint of the third floor you can enjoy the view of the Old Port Esplanade. An underground passageway leads the Building dall'Éperon archaeological crypt directly underneath the Place Royale, where visitors can admire the remains of Montreal, and even the foundation walls of structures discovered. Actually is internationally famous for the large-scale opera performances and every year about 600,000 people coming to Verona to admire spectacular productions of the popular operas in this Arena. In summer you can enjoy the opera in Arena during the summer festival organized by Fondazione Arena di Verona, Aida or Boheme, Nabucco or La Traviata, Il Barbiere di Siviglia o Carmen.Later you can visit Castelvecchio, it is an ancient military fortress of the city, another emblematic symbol Verona. The castle stands, probably in the location of another building,a Roman fortress erected outside the original Roman City, possibly built as check point and defencive structure. This construction was transformed into an art museum, called Museo Civico D´Arte which contains an excellent picture gallery with works of 15th and 16th century of the great Veronese school.

Next to the castle you can admire and walking on it the beautiful Ponte di Castelvecchio (Castelvecchio Bridge) called also Scaliger Bridge ( Ponte Scaligero) it is a fortified bridge over the Adige River and it It was built by Cangrande II della Scala, a safe way of escape from the annexed eponymous castle in the event of a rebellion of the population. The bridge is in red bricks and white marble measuring 48.70 m.Apart the historic and relevant value of this construction,I recommend a stop at sunset the view is splendid, romantic, the lights of the Adige river are a great component for an unforgettable view in an unique atmosphere.Verona offers a wide variety of excellent restaurants,.you can enjoy Ristorante Accademia, Menu is mixed ,sea food and local dishes, excellent lamb chops and steaks, excellent wines, Bardolino, Valpolicella,Soave and so on..

Juliet’s house is a jewel of Gothic art dating back to the 13th century.Numerous graffiti and stick notes can also be found on the walls and doors in the courtyard. The graffitis are not ovely to see, but it has a rather romantic origin, it’s the names and messages of other lovers in Verona marking their names in the fabled location of one of the greatest love stories of all time.Inside the house there is a small museum, frescoes, paintings, and ceramics from the 16th and 17th century. For dinner you can go to the Ristorante Il Desco, it is not so far from the Juliet House, excellent risotti, gnocchi, fish and seafood all that with a very good range of local wines.

Falun-Sweden-Visit the Swedish Empress of Nordic Ski and Queen of Copper.

Falun is a Swedish town of about 40,000 inhabitants situated in the central Sweden in the region of Dalama. Its historic fame is famous worldwide for the production of copper and to be an UNESCO patrimony site thanks the extraction of this precious mineral and to be one of the Capital of Nordic Ski.In Scandinavia including Norway and Finland this name Falun is so famous and respected,a legend and a temple of Ski Nordic,a stronghold of Swedish Ski Cross Country and Jumping Ski as well.I visited Falun in two occasions because, after the first I wanted to know better this Swedish town, here you learn a lot about Swedish culture and history.Sweden is a beautiful country,it is not only the beautiful capital Stockholm, the wonderful Göteborg, the shining Uppsala, there are many splendid places to visit.

About 230 km North East from the capital Stockholm and 195 km North East from the historic city of  Uppsala.Falun apart Nordic Ski is famous for its copper mines, they provide the two.thirds of the extraction worldwide. The former area of this important resources Falu Koppargruva have been declared UNESCO Patrimony heritage in 2001.

Falun River divides the city into two area, one side is where you can see the copper mines while on the other side there is the residential area. With humour some inhabitants of Falun call the side of the mines, ugly town and the centre on the other side nice and pretty. The town of Falun was built in the 11th century, when Sweden started a research of copper in this rich area in small scale, more than a city Falun was a village populated by the first miners and researchers. Two centuries later this centre was already famous to extract this precious mineral thanks a very intense extraction activity, the first agglomeration was in particular built with modest and humble houses hosting the miners. After three very productive and fantastic for the economy
for the economy of Sweden, which became an international power, covering different markets
about the exportation of this mineral,in 1641 Falun received from the Swedish Royal Family the title of city with the Royal Certificate "Sverige Stadsprivilegium".In this period Falun began to organise an urban plan, thanks to the copper industry the city reached a population of over 6,500 inhabitants and it was one of the most populous of the Swedish Kingdom.

In all the 17th century Falun flourished with the construction of a charming and captivating historic centre, coloured and picturesque houses,a pretty urbanisation of the streets, the city started to host German mine engineers, who gave a great support in terms of research and technology, that period is considered the golden age of Falun, the city became the World Capital of copper.Unfortunately in 1687,the city suffered a disaster,a gigantic landslide, which covered over 3 km  miles diameter lack of planning on the farm.Today you can see Stora Stoten, the Great Pit one of the most important attraction generated by this disaster, 95 m depth and 400 m in diameter the view is really impressive thinking also what could happen if the workers were operating in the mines in that time.

The disaster did not cover human life, the workers in that period was on holidays, although a decline the following centuries developed Falun in a very important industrial centre, the city had the most modern industrial complex of this sector and of course the most trendy systems of extraction and further more the regional rail line works finished connecting Falun to Göteborg the second Swedish city. The exploitation of the mines continued until the end of 1992,today the city lives mainly about tourism, sport and some cultural events although the mines still provide a kind of copper called Falun red.

The most attractive area of Falun is the neighbourhood od Kopparberg, with its picturesque red houses called Falürod, curiously the name translated from Swedish language means Falun Red just like the mineral extracted in the mines, pedestrian streets and some interesting bars and cafes.Falun was in the 19th century one of the most visited attractions in Sweden, for its pretty historical centre and naturally for its economic productive value,a proud for the Scandinavian country.

The ancient appearance of Falun is currently, partially visible in three districts of the city,Elsborg,Gamla Herrgarden and Ostanförs.The most historical street is Falugatan dated 15th century,it is considered the symbol of the old city, also for importance because it links near the river the eastern area of Falun to the western. In the last 50 years was often remodelled and restored and today there is only a original ancient complex of houses the Körnerska Huset,a house which kept the original aspect.

Stora Torget is a wide square covered by cobblestone, the square where is located the Radhuset, the Falun Town Hall dated half 17th century, destroyed by a fire in the 18th century, the town hall was rebuilt using the same materials, only in the modern era the aspect changed with the addition of a second floor. In the same square you can see a building called Centralpalatset (Central Palace) dated late 19th century, although the building has had different kind of restoration is today one of  of the most attractive building of Falun,a beautiful example of Nordic Art Nouveau,Selma Lagerlöf Swedish writer Nobel Prize lived in this building.

Stora Gruvstugan, this majestic yellow building is located on the mines side, its style Rococo a classic example of late Barocco in Scandinavia .Despite its actual aspect Stora Gruvstugan was erected in the late 19th century over a previous built in the late 18th century as headquarter of the mine offices and today host the Mine Museum, here you can admire the talented inventions by Cristhopher Polhem and an exhibition about Swedish coins, with an example of the largest coin found in Sweden. The museum apart the Mine Tour under request offers the chance to visit the section 65 m underground,a way to know better the Mine World of Falun.

Kirka Kpparberg, the church of the Great Copper Mountains is the oldest building in Falun, built in the 12th century is pretty well conserved, the nearest cemetery is another symbol of the city because is buried Fet Mats Israelsson a miner found after the disaster of 1677,the body of this man was re found after over 40 years, perfectly conserved and the wife re known him.

Kristine Kirka, the church of St.Christine is the main church of Falun.Built in the 17th century, the aspect of this church reflects the typical Renaissance Scandinavian architecture, using bricks for the structure and copper roof with a dome. The interior is very attractive with a wide nave flanked by high columns with arcades, one of the highlight is of course its organ made in the city of Orebro, considered one of the best example of Swedish organs and another one more modern of the 80s.

Dalarna Museum is another attraction,it is particularly important because in this building was rebuilt the studio of the famous Swedish writer Selma Langerlolf the first woman to receive a Nobel Prize in literature. It is very interesting to visit this museum to know better the history of this great Swedish writer so famous for her work "Nils Holgerssons, underbara resa genom Sverige" translated the wonderful travels of Nils Holgerssons,a wonderful story of a young boy visiting different area of Sweden and meeting animals, discovering new places. Selma Langerlolf wrote this book having inspiration from the works by Indian writer Rudyard Kipling. The Swedish School system adopted this work to teach the children geography, the world of animals and trying to transmit all the beauties there are also in your country.

Falun is an important Swedish University centre,Högskolan Dalama, this is the name of the College has over 17,000 students,it is a prestigious Institute in particular in the departments of Humanities,Science,Technology and business. The Dalama University is shared with the nearest town of Börlange. Thanks to that is a very young city, lively, with some festivals and events.Falun organises every year the FFF Falun Folk Festival, this kind of event started with the first edition in 1986 as a Festival of music but not long time ago was incorpored in this event also dance, further more other events worth a mention Rock City, Falun Festival the festival of the city, the Music Festival all celebrated in summer and some concerts. The Nisserska and Dala theatres offer a good quality of performances and the National Conservatory organises interesting activities as well.Other events in Falun are the Falun Hostmarkad the Autumn Market celebrated between the late august and beginning of September,a lively market with different kind of products, while every june is celebrated Falakasalet a great event consisting in a large market, music and different kind of shows.

Ski and in particular Nordic Ski as I mentioned in  Blogs about Holmenkollen(Norway) and Lathi (Finland)
is part of culture,in this part of Europe the skis are just like friends, people starts to use them in a very young age and to be famous in one sport is the dream of many children.

Sport is absolutely a highlight in Falun as in all Sweden, the prestigious tradition of Nordic Ski is a religion in this Swedish city just like in the Finnish Lathi or in the Norwegian Holmenkollen, every year the Ski Jumping complex of Lugnet and part of the centre host, which host the Ski Games are places full of passion for these sports, here you live a great friendly atmosphere,in Scandinavian country sport is culture, the competition is very intense but at the end it is sport,an activity links people,in that Scandinavian countries are on the top, here you can live this culture, finished a race or a competition,no polemics,no fights no bad comments, there is a great culture of sport here all finish with a great feast..

Apart the traditional Nordic Sports, other sports with good prestige are the Ice Hockey with the Club Falun Gavle which launches interesting players in a country where this kind of sport has a lot of fans and famous players playing in all the most important leagues of the World,Canada,USA,Germany,Switzerland,Kallur and Thomas Jonsson two legendary Swedish players of the National Team, who played in the NHL several seasons are from Falun from Falun are also the sisters Susana and Jenny Kallur, athletes specialists of sprint hurdles.Falun has a great sport tradition,Marcus Ljungqvist former professional cyclist and now Team Sky Manager is from Falun too. Apart copper, sports, its monuments and cultural events Falun is also famous for the production of sausages, the Falukorv. This kind of sausage is produced in Falun since the 1870 when Anders Olsson had the idea to create this kind of sausage,a mixture of beef and pork meat with the addition of some spices and potato flour. The success of this gastronomic product derive from the ancient tradition of German immigrants and workers living in Falun, who transmitted how to prepare the Falukorv sausage.

In the 70s the Falukorv became a protected patrimony recipe of Falun, receiving the certificate TSG, it is used in different kind of traditional plates accompanying brown beans, prepared in the oven with grated  cheese  and served also with vegetables, mashed potatoes, mustard and other sauces, further more this sausage is also fried and served in sandwiches..A curious event about Falukorv is dated 1992 when in Falun a sausage of over 80 m was made and served for over 4,000 people.Today the Falukorv is exported worldwide, the flavour is similar to other smoked sausages from Germany and Denmark, preapred with mild spices,it is particularly excellent for its gastronomic versatility to be combined in different plates and it can be cooked in the oven, boiled, grilled or fried.

Falun is also famous for handcrafts, typical is the production of wooden objects, emblematic symbols and not only of Falun but of the whole Sweden are the Dala Horse and the Dala Maiden, these small figures have an ancient artisanal tradition, started in the 17th century, the objects are painted and decored with kurbits a local style to paint lines, curves and items.

Mijas Costa del Sol | Pleasurable Escapade for Sun Lovers.

Mijas is one of those splendid places in Costa del Sol to enjoy pleasurable escapades for sun lovers,a pleasant, splendid and attractive seaside resort,a lively, demanded and sunny destination to spend short breaks and holidays which apart all that also offers the chance to visit historic cities of  that shining jewel of Southern Spain called Andalusia with the brilliant detail of an average media of about 300/305 days of sunshine a year, which is definitely a stupendous incentive to take in great consideration.

Approximately 30,0 km south west of Malaga,,Mijas is one of the largest municipalities in the county of that city, extending its lands from the local mountains and the Sierra de Alpujata to the Mediterranean coast through an undulating territory formed by hills and mountains, consisting in the Cordillera Penibética, presenting an overview of about 1,000 m of media altitude, reaching the top with 1,150 m  with Mijas peak.

Bordered by the towns of Fuengirola and Benalmadena at north, Alhaurin de la Torre, Alhaurin el Grande and Coin at west, close to the famed Marbella and Ojen.Mijas had a growing urban development in the last three decades, despite that it has conserved and preserved its charming aspect and it is today one of the gems of the famous Costa del Sol.

Despite is today a quite large resort and very over sized by tourism with the construction of  modern buildings it has kept in the old town that charming appeal which once made it so attractive with Moorish style architecture, typical whitewashed Andalusian houses and cobblestone streets,a coastal white village which shows a very attractive aspect.

The core of Mijas Pueblo is situated at an altitude of 428 m,,the presence of  the mountains surrounding the town gives that enchanting place the character of a typical white village of Andalusia.Mijas Pueblo is also the administrative centre of the town, home of the Ayuntamiento (the City Hall)  and most of its historic buildings and around it  finally,a number of scattered agglomerations of more or less rural character such as Valtocado, Entrerríos Osunillas and La Alquería with several isolated housing estates developed around excellent golf courses.

The main economic local activity of the town is nowadays obviously tourism and all those activities arising from it.The municipality has a very good number Hotels and other of hospitality establishments including Hostels,Pensions and Apartments which all together provides a capacity of approximately 3,000 beds, that  relevant number is of course a great result with regard to the residential tourism area, considering that Mijas with the nearest Marbella and Estepona, they reach approximately the  54% of the offer on the Costa del Sol.

Due to the development pressures and the massive presence of golf courses, both as industrial farming occupy a limited space. However there are still some wide rural areas with over 1,600 hectares under cultivation in in which the main are, potatoes, cereals, olive trees and ornamental plants in particular avocado and about livestock the main presence is related about sheep, goats, swine and equine.

With its  80,00 inhabitants,Mijas is the third town of the coast in terms of population,it focuses on three main agglomerations such as the mentioned Mijas Pueblo, located on the slope of the local Sierra,Las Lagunas, located in an area also called Mijas Costa. That is  part of the urban prolongation reaching the outskirts of the resort of Fuengirola which is the modern area hosting the industrial and commercial area of Mijas, rhe two resorts are separates by the A-7 highway, forming a single conurbation.

La Cala with its approximately 12 km of coastline in an area which extends around the large estates which occupy the entire coast, such as Calahonda, El Faro and El Chaparral.

Inhabited since ancient time ,the former small village, was devoted mainly to agriculture and fisheries until  the explosion of tourism, started in the 50s of the last century.Today Mijas thanks all that is a cosmopolitan and multicultural resort with a high percentage of foreign residents and one of the main residential tourism in Andalusia.

Historically the current resort was a settlement belonging to the Turdetania, founded inside fortification of which are still remains in the current plateau.Phoenicians and Greeks visited and settled in that land, particularly attracted by the presence of  minerals and precious metals which abounded in the territory.

The current resort was also colonised by the Romans who called it Tamisa which was transformed in an important trade centre, thanks also to the construction of the Appian Road which linked Malaga to Cadiz, furthermore the Roman Empire decided  there,yo develop the terracing and the planting of the first local vineyards.

After the fall of the Roman Empire replaced by the conquest of the land by the Visigoths and later by the Moorish who followed after the capture of Malaga in the year 714,the new Muslim rulers allowed the inhabitants of the former Tamisa to maintain their properties, their religion and customs,in return for a third of what they produced,it was thee origin of a sort of pre Feudalism of that time. Many things changed including the name, and the former settlement was renamed Mixa.

In the period of the powerful Caliphate of Cordoba,Mijas was conquered by a charismatic figure called Omar Ben Hafsun, along with other places close to the coast such as as Tolox and Comares, remaining in the hands of his troops until the rule of Rahman III in the  9th century.

In 1487,Mijas resisted to the attacks of the Catholic Monarchs during the siege of Malaga and surrounding, event after which its inhabitants surrendered unconditionally and were sold as slaves to the nobility who participated in the war and after the conquest of Granada proceeded to the distribution of houses, palaces and lands,it was the famous period called Reconquista, the reconquest.

A few years later, during the War of the Communities, the current resort remained loyal to Emperor Charles I who granted it the title of Loyal Allied and in the year 1521 it was declared exempt from taxes, giving it the official title of town.

During that period until the 18th century, the piracy along that Spanish coast was pretty intense,so that, following the example of the late 15th century to warn the population and to fight the invaders, began to be built along the coastline towers which are still conserved.

In the 19th century, the town mainly had in agriculture and fishing, some farmers and mineral extraction its most important resources, the vineyards culture which was among the main important in Mijas until the phylloxera plague of 1880 which destroyed almost all the plants around the municipality had a notable decrease.

Ad alternative  activity was created an important network linked to the production of paper,as there is evidence of the existence of a number of mills located in the immediate surroundings. The nearest Osunillas from mid-century was the most productive centre of that kind of industry providing the important  makers of  Valencia which created new functional links around that manufacture.

In the year 1873 an important event which changed the future of the resort happened when the road between Mijas and Fuengirola was opened, since there the town was segregated as a secondary centre, nothing of important since that construction was developed in terms of communication, that was undoubtedly a relevant improvement.

However, the town remained isolated until the time of the Second Republic, there was no telephone until 1953 and according to contemporary historic information, the town consisted mostly of humble families.living mainly of agriculture and some fishermen but without a relevant organisation. The population was in major part scattered through the countryside, which had a small farmers and tiny hamlets.

During the postwar period there was much hunger and lack of work, since the only thing left was the collection of grass in the mountains to the rush,a situation aggravated by the existence of lack of water in Mijas.During those years there were also many operations anti-regime dictatorship of some people who had the popular support and respect by the locals.

Very interesting following the local history of Mijas is to take a look to the famous Torres Vigia which are four watchtowers which were part a former coastal defencive line located along the Mediterranean coast of Andalusia.

From east to west: there are the Torre Calaburras, the Torre Nueva de La Cala del Moral,Torre Battery La Cala del Moral and the Torre de Calahonda, all them are the former fortification so famous along the Costa del Sol erected to defend the land from the pirates attacks and invasions and definitely are part of the historic patrimony and heritage of that pleasant resort.

The so called La Virgen de la Peña is the Hermitage of the Virgin de la Peña which is situated in a square with the same name is one of the great highlights of the resort,it is the dedicated to the Virgin Patroness the Virgin, with an image which was supposedly discovered in the 16th century.

it is a magnificent shrine carved in the rock by a Carmelite monk Diego de Jesus between 1656 and 1682 who added an irregular stoned sacristy trying to simulate a natural masterpiece. The exterior was developed with the same intention with an access to half a point and a small belfry. In a niche carved int the front there is the Virgen de la Peña,.The history of that shrine has its origin with a double appearance of the Virgin with two children in the town.

In Calle del Carril the Iglesia de la Inmaculata Concepcion (the Church of the Immaculate Conception) which was built probably in the 15th century and rearranged in the 16th century with new architectonic elements. It was erected  on the rests of a former fortress which became later a Mosque and one tower was used as bell tower, that one you can see today, the religious building took from the former construction was developed from  Mudejar tower to fulfil the functions of the belfry an it was consecrated in 1631.

Erected on the ruins of an old Mosque, the religious building took from the former construction its Mudejar tower to fulfil the functions of the belfry. It has three naves separated by arches which alight on marble columns, covering the central wooden Mudejar  chancel and transepts. In the epistle opens another larger chapel with hemispherical domes decorated with plaster dated 1705. During its restoration between 1992 and 1993 were discovered eight frescoes with images of apostles, dating from the first half of the 17th century.

The Hermita de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios is a Shrine dedicated to  of Our Lady of Remedies or also called Santa Ana in honour of St.Anne.Situated in the square Plaza de los Caños in the district of Santa Ana,it was erected in the early 18th century,it is a small Church with a single nave, restored in some occasions with a sculpture of the Virgin dated 18th century.

The aspect is very sober, but at the same charm for its simplicity, developed on a wide rectangular plan,it is a white religious building with a dark brown arched doorway and a small roof on which was placed two bells inside a rectangular belfry.

Take a look to the interesting Iglesia de San Sebastian, situated in a corner next to Plaza de la Libertad (Freedom square) a Church dedicated to  San Sebastian. Its construction is dated the late 17th century despite it was renovated several times. It consists in single nave developed on an irregular square plan with an hemispherical cross-vaulted and a wall with paintings depicting some angels. It is very attractive with its white facade,a pretty, small arched portal and its watch placed under a rectangular section on the top containing in a small rectangular belfry a bell.

Parque de la Muralla,is another place worth a visit,it is a park  located in the upper town, consisting in a complex of gardens arranged on the ruins of an ancient fortress surrounding the village and containing different species of plants which are complemented by a sort of terrace overlooking the Mediterranean. Among its main attractions,it includes the route of the Wall, the gazebo and a waterfall 15 m high with lights with drops of water falling to the rhythm of music.

At the top of Mijas in a splendid corner of the wild Sierra, you can admire the picturesque white  Ermita del Calvario (Calvary Chapel) a small hermitage which is nestled in a mountainous area surrounded by rocks. It was built around 1710 for the removal of the Carmelite monks who lived in the Monasterio del Compas an ancient monastery.

The shrine was erected on a former convent and it is accessed by a road used for the Via Crucis at Easter and since it can be seen beautiful views of both the town and the coast.

The Religious building has a arched tiny portal on a white facade topped by a belfry,it reflects the traditional local architecture, with simple lines and no external decorations, the place where was developed its tiny Chapel is simply outstanding with stunning views, very suggested to take pictures thanks to the wild natural environment and wonderful panoramic views.

Very interesting is another shirne situated on the road which links the resort to Benamadena, in Partido Rural de Osunillas the Ermita de San Anton a small religious building which just like the previous was built in the 18th century and site of monks of the Benedectine Order. It has a single nave, the size of the Holy polychrome wood is from the same period and it is dedicated to  St.Anthony.That sacred white building is very charming,of limited size it present a gable red roof combined with a tiny belfry with a bell,it was erected on the ruins of a construction of the ancient Tamisa.

The resort also offers in its relevant patrimony the opportunity to visit very interesting museums, one of them is Carromato Max which was opened in 1972 and it is the world's first museum of miniatures among the most important pieces highlight shows the Lord's Prayer written on the edge of a card or Abraham Lincoln painted on the head of a pin, among others.Other curiosities which make it interesting are stuffed dressed fleas,a ballet dancer carved on a toothpick, a naval battle at the head of a pin or the Last Supper by Leonardo Da Vinci.

Another interesting exhibition is the Museo Historico-Ethnologico (Historical-Ethnological Museum) opened in 1995 and containing a collection of farm tools and utensils fishing, oil mills,a warehouse and typical and traditional  local kitchen objects, that place is very interesting to discover or learn more about local culture showing the visitor a very extensive chronological history of the town with its most traditional and historic items.
