The district municipalities of Viseu and Coimbra are now connected by the opening of the Ecovia do Mondego, a project that required an investment of €1.7 million and the centers of Santa Comba Dão, Mortãgua, Penakova, and Vila Nova de Poiares are directly connected in an eco-route that runs through the valley of the Mondego River for over 40 km and has been presented for examination as part of the "valorizar" program of Tourismo de Portugal.
The Mayor of Santa Comba Dão commented that the opening of this eco-route is important for the growth of the region, pointing out that the Dão and Vouga routes were already present in the north but there was no connection with the south.
CIM President Região de Coimbra commented that the soft mobility strategy places great relevance on eco-routes and cycle paths.
The Secretary of State for Tourism Pedro Machado underlined the value of the cooperation of the regions as a network is particularly important and essential to maximize the financial resources available as in the case of the Ecovia do Mondego and it will be an extraordinary path that will be among the most interesting in Portugal.
Using the eco-route that now connect the CIM regions of Viseu, Dão Lafões and Coimbra it will allow to increasingly the structure of the tourism product to remain competitive.
This investment in soft mobility is focused on a tourism that is closer to the territory and consequently more sustainable and these investments are needed to capture new flows. Many tourists are more willing to invest more in the holiday destination if this also contributes to decarbonization to a certain reduction in the footprint that all economic activities end up impacting.
