France | Plans to Significantly Increase TSBA Tax on Airline Tickets

France plans to significantly increase the TSBA, solidarity tax applied to the aviation industry on airline tickets with the aim of raising more than €1 million by 2025, an action with a major change that could significantly affect international air travel, which will substantially impact long-haul travelers and for the French state will contribute to environmental goals.

These measures are part of the budget plan of France's 2025, a financial maneuver which aims to increase revenue and consequently contribute to environmental sustainability efforts, although the repercussions for travellers flying from France, especially on long-haul routes to intercontinental destinations will be significant.

The TSBA, initially introduced in 2006 under the presidency of Jacques Chirac, is a tax that is imposed specifically on airline tickets with the aim of generating funds for international development assistance primarily focused on the field of health.

Over the years this tax has remained a rather small component in the cost of flights for most passengers especially on long-haul flights, however the situation is destined to change radically and drastically with this new proposal.

The French Ministry of Economy and Finance has outlined specific levels for the increase in taxes with values that depend on the distance of the flight, formulating a special table that specifies several points.

·       Flights of less than 1.000 kilometers - decision not yet made, including flights to and from abroad.

·       Flights between 1.000 and 5.000 kilometers - € 42.0 for economy class and € 100.0 for business class.

·       Flights over 5.000 kilometers - € 60.0 for economy class, € 200.0 for business class and € 3.000 for private jets.

Currently, passengers on long-haul flights over 5.000 kilometres pay a fee of € 7.51, so the proposed changes undoubtedly show a substantial increase.

To give a simplified example, an economy class flight departing from Paris and with an intercontinental destination such as Tokyo or New York, both of which are considered long-haul, would see a tax component increase almost eightfold.
