Mexico and Guatemala are negotiating to connect the Yucatán Mexican state located in the south - east of the territory, in the northern part of the peninsula of the same name, land well known for its Gulf of Mexico, Mayan ruins and pristine beaches to Petén, the northernmost department of Guatemala and also the largest, a territory famous for a large number of archaeological sites belonging to the ancient Maya civilization.
In this Guatemalan territory lies the emblematic site, Tikal, iconic Mayan citadel in the rainforest of northern Guatemala boasting one of the largest archaeological sites of the pre - Columbian Maya civilization stands out with the iconic ruins and palaces, including the giant “Mundo Perdido” the Lost World, Pyramid and the Temple of the Grand Jaguar and Tikal National Park declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.
Tha Maya Train is a 1.554 kilometres long intercity railways that traverses the Yucatán Peninsula, the route begins in Palenque in the state of Chiapas and travels northeast toward Cancún in the state of Quintana Roo via two routes that encircle the peninsula.
The rail line aims to connect tourist destinations in the Caribbean with lesser - known sites inland but also with relevant Mayan sites from which it derives its name.
Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo has negotiated with Mexico for the Mayan Train to make the route from Chetumal, city and capital of the state of Quintana Roo to the east coast of Yucatán Peninsula passing through the state of Belize while another option would be from Tenosique, town in the southeastern corner of the state of Tabasco and directly to Flores, capital of the Guatemalan department of Petén.
The Guatemalan President added that work is being done to connect Petén with the Mayan train in Yucatán and there is progress in negotiations with Mexico, which has already shown its support.
Linked to all that the President of Mexico Claudia Sheinbaum has already confirmed that the Mayan train will already have an extension to Puerto Progreso well know port city and common stop for cruise ships located on the Gulf of Mexico along with its freight service.
