Nicaragua, the geographically largest country in Central America set between the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean, well known for its volcanoes, long coastline with splendid, sandy beaches and dramatic terrain of lakes is showing great commitment to the development and evolution of sustainable tourism in its territory.

As proof of all that, the Co-Director of Intur the Nicaraguan Institute of Tourism Anasha Campbell participated in the IX meeting of the Human Development of Sustainable Tourism on 27th September as part of the celebration of World Tourism Day, an event organized by the State Distance University of Costa Rica and highly focused on the theme of Tourism and Peace.

The Co-Director of Intur was the protagonist of the presentation of the conference "Development Experiences in Nicaragua" where she shared the evolution of the country's tourism industry under the slogan "Tourism and Peace".

Tourism in Nicaragua began to develop in a concrete way at the end of the 90s and with a progressive step by step it has generated a momentum with optimal results thanks to the policy implemented since 2007 led by President Daniel Ortega who prioritized tourism within the National Human Development Plan focused on the fight against poverty and social inclusion that has facilitated sustained economic growth in the country.

Linked to that the Co-Director of Intur stated that National Plan to combat Poverty and focused on Human Development in its 2022 - 2026 version, has the human being as its central axis seeking to structurally transform society to overcome marginalization and exclusion unleashing the development potential of the Nicaraguan families.

Tourism is part of the country's creative economy, with its action is an accessible, inclusive, responsible and sustainable model and engine for all that contributes to greatly improving the quality of life of the local population, the emancipation of women, indigenous and Afro-descendant communities, young people, the preservation of Nicaraguan cultural and natural heritage,  understanding between peoples and the culture of peace.

Despite relevant challenges such as the Covid-19 pandemic in recent years and natural phenomena, with great commitment and efforts Nicaragua in 2023 achieved revenues worth $ 739 million from tourism highlighting the increase in average tourist spending.
