Porto – Portugal | Best Emerging Gastronomic Destination in Europe at World Culinary Awards

 

Porto, second city of Portugal after Lisbon, captivating centre located on the northern bank of the Douro River not far from the Atlantic Ocean, commercial and industrial hub for the zone north of the Mondego River highlighted by its stunning historic centre which was designed a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1996, for the production of fine wines and an important historic and cultural heritage distinguished itself at the World Culinary Awards winning the title of Best Emerging Gastronomic Destination in Europe.

This important recognition rewards the excellent offer and experience in the gastronomy sector of Porto which in the vote to achieve this coveted seal that increases the visibility of the destinations has surpassed other candidates such as Batumi - Georgia, Berlin - Germany, Cannes - France and Dubrovnik - Croatia, a result that according to the municipality of Porto is a reflection of the commitment that Porto has made in this sector.

The Organization of the World Culinary Awards has specified that the choice of Porto as the winner in this category confirms the tourist, cultural and gastronomic richness of the city and the northern region, a destination capable of attracting both foodies and travelers in search of culture and authenticity.

Porto is also associated with the launch of important projects such as Global Kitchen, a gastronomic journey around the world that has brought to the city big names in international cuisine focused on open experience of gastronomic creation with traditions and innovations as well as the participation in the Festival of Culture and Gastronomy of Tiradentes, Brazilian centre within the state of Minas Gerais,  considered the major and most traditional gastronomy festival of the country and the World Forum Culinary Tourism, a famous joint initiative of the World Tourism Organization and the Basque Culinary Center created with the aim of promoting the exchange of experiences between experts in tourism and gastronomy.

The Municipal Chamber of Porto declared that the investment to position the city internationally in this segment undoubtedly constitutes one of the axes of the Vision of the Future of the Sustainability for Porto Destination has been carried out in cooperation and conjunction with several entities, one of them Turismo del Norte, a project that led to Porto recently being chosen as the venue for the famed Michelin Guide Gala which in 2025 will once again distinguish the Best National Restaurants.
