Trenitalia SpA, the primary train operator of Italy partly owned by the Italian Government and a subsidiary of Ferrovie dello Stato S,p.A., Italy's national state - owned railway holding company that manages transport, infrastructure and real estate services and SkyTeam, one of the world's three major airline alliances founded in 2000 and with its centralised management team, SkyTeam Central, based in Amstelveen - Netherlands, has signed a memorandum of understanding to offer combined train + plane in a single booking.

This partnership undoubtedly represents a new step forward for the so-called intermodality, the intermodal passenger transport also named mixed - mode commuting that involves using two or more modes of transportation in a journey.

The agreement, explained in a joint note by the two organizations will allow travellers arriving in Italy with a flight of the Skyteam Alliance airlines to reach destinations connected by Trenitalia with high-speed trains.

When the partnership is effective SkyTeam frequent flyer members will be able to earn and spend miles when they travel on selected Frecciarossa routes and at the same time members of CartaFreccia, the loyalty card that allows you to accumulate points and request tickets or rewards from the catalog will be able to earn and spend points by traveling on selected SkyTeam Alliance flights.

SkyTeam CEO Patrick Roux commented that Italy is an important global market for business and leisure travellers and thanks to the collaboration with Trenitalia there are more options to offer customers to go how and where they want while enjoying the many benefits for which SkyTeam is known.

Trenitalia Marketing Director and CEO of Italia Loyalty Mario Alovisi said that the collaboration with SkyTeam brings Trenitalia closer to the group's vision of being one of the main players in the European rail transport market.
