Iberia, Spain's flag carrier based in Madrid founded in 1927 legally constituted as Iberia Lineas Aéreas de España, S.A. Operadora member of Oneworld Alliance with its main hub at Adolfo Suárez Madrid - Barajas Airport is the first airline in the world to acquire the first Airbus A321XLR A321XLR.
The Spanish airline incorporates the first unit of the eight acquired by the manufacturer, a brand new model with which Airbus intends to revolutionize the long haul.
The A321XLR seats 182 passengers in a two-class layout with lie - flat business class seats with direct aisle access which according to Iberia will allow to transform the business model.
The new Airspace cabin will offer passengers maximum comfort on long-haul journeys and the XL compartments offer 60% more cabin baggage capacity.
The new model is the next evolutionary step for the A320neo. It will offer an unprecedented extra-long range of up to 4.700 nautical miles, which means 15% more range than the A321LR and a fuel consumption per seat 30% lower fuel consumption per seat compared to previous generation aircraft as well as a reduction in NOx emissions, and Airbus has received more than 500 orders so far.
Iberia CEO and President Marco Sansavini commented that he is very proud that Iberia is a pioneer for the launch of this new Airbus aircraft, the A32XLR will allow it to reach new destinations, manage transoceanic routes and do so more efficiently.
Airbus Commercial Aircraft CEO Christian Scherer said the A321XLR will allow countless non-stop destinations to be reached, opening a new chapter in air connectivity.
