Thailand | Projects to Build Six Airports to Transform the Country as a Relevant Global Hub

Thailand,  Southeast Asian country situated on the Indochinese Peninsula facing a large gulf, known for its pristine, tropical beaches but also for its rich historical and cultural heritage with wonderful palaces, pagodas and wonderfully decorated Buddhist temples, next to ancient ruins wants to double its passenger capacity with projects to build six regional airports to transform itself as a relevant global hub.

These projects come at a time when the Asian nation wants to take advantage of the relentless increase in air traffic increasing its connectivity with the rest of the world.

The new six regional airports will be built near Mukhdahan, town situated in the northern region of the country, on the right bank Mekong River, in Bueng Kan, in northeastern Thailand on the Mekong River opposite to the Laotian town of Paxkan,Satun, in the south of Thailand located along the coast of the Andaman Sea,  Phayao in upper northern of the country close to the Laos border, Kalasin in the upper northeastern of the nation and Phattalung in the far south Thailand on the west coast of Songkhl Lake at the foot of Ok Thalu Mountain.

With these various projects, Thailand should be able to accommodate 246.5 million passengers by 2032 compared to just under 120 million today, becoming an airport hub of considerable importance in Southeast Asia.

In addition to all that, the Ministry of Transport of Thailand intends to accelerate the expansion projects of the most important airports in the country, starting with that of Suvarnabhumi near the capital Bangkok.

This project involves the development of a new terminal much larger than the current main terminal which is expected to increase passenger capacity to 70 million per year and also developing a fourth runway which should be completed by 2031.

Don Mueang Airport, one of two international airports serving Bangkok currently used as a secondary hub for low-cost flights, both domestic and international destinations, will undergo major renovations and the construction of a new international terminal with the aim of attracting 40 million passengers a year and exceeding the 30 million currently registered.

Near Pattaya, a well-known seaside resort in Eastern Thailand in Chomburi province, the current U-Tapao airport will change in size as the Thai government wants to transform it into a very important hub in Southeast Asia with an expansion aimed at welcoming up to 12 million passengers each year by 2028.
