UN Tourism, the United Nations World Tourism Organization, agency responsible for the promotion of responsible, sustainable and universally accessible tourism headquartered in the capital of Spain, Madrid, has awarded the most innovative projects in different regions of Colombia, South American country that is proving to be very active in terms of startups and innovation.
The "Innovation Challenge: Community Tourism in Colombia" has come to a close during the 122nd session of the United Nations Executive Council of Tourism which took place in Cartagena de Indias, famous port city on Colombia's Caribbean coast.
The challenge was launched to identify leaders and ideas that are helping to build an inclusive future for the sector across the region and is organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism of Colombia and FONTUR, the National Tourism Fund.
This initiative aims to reach out to Colombian entrepreneurs, community organizations and companies engaged in community tourism in a collaborative way to develop projects that position the country as a destination of excellence in the field of community tourism, with a focus on sustainability and resilience.
The winning projects are:
Category 1 : Rural and urban communities : Comunidad del Encanto - Boyacá - Connects eight communities through gamified experiences.
Category 2 : Women and youth : Lunaris - Nariño - Highlights the beauty of the El Charmolan Nature Reserve through conservation and visual narration.
Category 3 : Ethnic Communities : Chiritour - Chocó - A cultural trip highlighting local traditions along the Atrato River.
Category 4 : Communities that build peace : Museum of Art and Memory – Bolivar – Space for reflection and empowerment through textile art.
Category 5 : Companies thar promote community tourism : Check – Offers sustainable travel experiences in 15 destinations, supporting local communities.
UN Tourism Executive Director Natalia Bayona said Community – based tourism is empowering people of all backgrounds, including women, youth and social groups in post – conflict situations. These examples showcase Colombia's best projects and leaders, making it clear that innovation can drive the creation of opportunities.
UN Tourism, through its Department of Innovation, Education and Investment, has developed 7 tourism entrepreneurship competitions - UN Tourism Startup Competitions, 6 Innovation Challenges – UN Specific Challenges and numerous tourism innovation and technology forums - UN Tourism Tech Adventures, creating an Innovation Network that encompasses more than 7.000 enterprises, 500 companies, 400 public institutions, 250 educational centres, 40 incubators / accelerators and 290 investors and this vibrant connection has generated more than $74 million for new companies.
