UN Tourism, specialized agency of the United Nations headquartered in Madrid – Spain aimed to promote responsible, sustainable and universally – accessible tourism in collaboration with France launches the UN Tourism National Open Innovation Challenge to promote innovation and entrepreneurship in tourism by focusing on sustainability and the global exchange of good practices.
This important initiative is a pioneering collaboration that marks a key milestone as it is the first time that UN Tourism and the French Government have joined forces in a strong coalition that has as its primary objective to promote innovation and entrepreneurship in the tourism sector.
Nowadays, France is the most visited country in the world with over 100 million international tourist arrivals in 2023 and has been a leader for several years in this ranking and is a dynamic hub of entrepreneurship and innovation with almost 60.000 startups, more 30 unicorns and several emerging projects, undoubtedly a leader and a model of innovation.
The Minister Delegate for the Economy of Tourism of France, Marina Ferrari said that France,the world's leading tourist destination is a hub of innovation with a vibrant ecosystem of start - up, is now equipping itself with the resources it needs to train the future champions of tourism technology and this is good news for the tourism economy,but also for the planet.
French startups solutions are created to build a more sustainable and responsible tourism and to decarbonie the entire sector and delighted that they can now benefit from the recognition and support of UN Tourism, which will allow them to become more international and share their best practices.
The UN Tourism Secretary General Zurab Pololikashvili affirmed that in the quality of the world's first tourist destination, France is at the forefront of innovation, new competition will help us find and recognize the next wave of innovation in tourism and will provide the support of those who have learned to truly transform the tourism sector.
The Executive Director of UN Tourism Natalia Bayona commented that UN Tourism applaudes the impressive Welcome to France and French Tech Initiatives that they are nurture and guide successful startups by leveraging the strengths of their communities.
They set an exemplary standard for the rest of the world, encompassing nearly 25.000 startups and representing more than 1.1 million direct and indirect jobs.
The challenge is open to pairs of French startups based in France and large companies from France or from abroad in the tourism sector.
The jointly developed solution must address a use case in travel technology or tourism innovation and startups must have a MVP, minimum viable product, a prototype or a solution ready to scale.
Companies must be able to provide resources, mentoring and support for implementation and aexpansion. Applications are now open and will colose at the end of march 2025.
