IHG Hotels & Resorts | Opened its First Hotel Brand Indigo in Nagasaki – Japan

 

Hotel Indigo, brand founded in 2004 and part of the British Multinational British hospitality company IHG Hotels & Resorts based in Winsdor - Berkshire - England - UK expanded its presents in Asia, concretely in Japan with the opening of Hotel Indigo Nagasaki Glover Street in Nagasaki, Japanese city on the northwestern coast of the island of Kyushu, a centre set on a large, natural harbour surrounded by hills and synonimus historically during the World War II suffering an Allied nuclear attack in August 1945.

The hotel opened on 13th December 2024 marks Japan’s fifth Hotel Indigo property and the the first in the Kyushu region is situated in the bustling and vibrant Minamiyamate, captivating area of Nagasaki, well known for its colourful and exotic atmosphere,  marked by 19th century Western - style mansions and villas and home of the former Old Glover House , an iconic World Heritage site and just a stone’s throw from Oura Cathedral, Japan oldest Christian Church another artistic treasure of Japan also known as the Basilica of the Twenty - Six Holy Martyrs.

The hotel has repurposed a 19th – century redbrick building, adding a unique and captivating dimension to the city’s hotel landscape and its opening was marked by an “Open the Umbrella” ribbon - cutting ceremony, symbolizing its connection with ther history of Nagasaki and its readiness to step into the future.

This ceremony featured local umbrellas with Nagasaki - themes patterns, paying tribute to the city, where Western - style umbrellas were first introduced in Japan.

The Hotel Indigo Nagasaki Glover Street embraced the Nagasaki’s culture with draw inspiration from the local culture, traditions and locations and the design of the 66 rooms and the lobby area are inspired by the history and vibrant atmosphere of the city as well as the Restaurant Cathedréclat, developed in a former cathedral with 10 - meter - high ceilings and stained - glass windows.

The hotel embodies the so called Wa - Ka - Ran Labyrinth philosophy, which merges the Wa,  the individual uniqueness of Japan, the Ka, representing China and Ran symbolizing the Netherlands to create a distinct multicultural blend, three characters that tell the story of the coming together of cultures when these characters came to be started between the 17th and 19th century, when Nagasaki became Japan’s early cosmopolitan gateway to the world developing solid trade and cultural interactions with the two countries previously mentioned.

This philosophy is still alive and evident throughout Nagasaki, from food, local clothing, festivals, sights, and the hotel’s ambiance.
