Bali, idyllic, demanded destination, a province of Indonesia and the westernmost of the Lesser Sunda Islands offering a rare fusion of rich cultural heritage, welcoming people, stunning natural beauties and a wide array of experiences is backtracking to ban the development of new hotels, tourist estblishments and beach clubs to fight overtourism in some of its busiest tourist areas in a proposal that included halting development in places such as Canggu, Kuta, Legian, Nusa Dua, Seminyak and Uluwatu.
According to the Bali Sun, the incoming Governor of Bali Wayan Koster claimed to have different plans commenting local media he does not believe a moratorium on tourism development in Bali's most popular hotspots is necessary.
In a recent press event the Governor of Bali, the Governor argues that the proposed ban is not necessary because strict controls are already in place, this turn of events is a disappointment to whose who feel that although there are regional regulations that are supposed to help control tourism and commercial development, few are strictly enforced and there is a kind of chaos in construction in the most demanded tourist areas.
The Governor, in addition, suggested that there will be applied stricter controls with some already in place than enacting a new policy banning construction all together, despite the fact that what existing policies could more strictly enforced, were not indicated or underlined.
The plan was initially put forward by Indonesia's outgoing Minister of Tourism Sadiaga Uno and Minister of Investments and Maritime Affairs, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitian, facing the phenomen of overtourism, the policy have gone in effect in October 2024 and would have remained in place for only one or two years, although it would have had the potential to be extended for up ten years if the measure appeared to work well.
When the move, designed to help Bali meet the serious challenges of overtourism, was proposed, it was endorsed by some of Bali's prominent leaders such as Acting Governor Sang Made Mahendra Jaya and the Chairman of BTB, Bali Tourism Board Ida Bagus Agung Partha Adnyana.
