Chile | Welcomed More than 5.2 Million International Tourists Last Year, the Best Figure Recorded Since the Pandemic

 

Chile, narrow land stretching along South America's western edge, between the imposing Andes mountain range and the Pacific Ocean, perfect place for adventure tourism from the Atacama Desert to Patagonia, boasting various hiking, climbing, horseback riding, watersports and extreme sports services, a land highlighted by dramatic landscapes, a delicious gastronomy and a rich cultural and historic heritage, welcomed more than 5.2 million visitors last year representing the best figure recorded since the pandemic and which puts 2024 as the year of the South Anerican country's tourism reactivation.

From January to December 2024, 5.239.233 international tourists visited Chile, which represents 40.4% more compared to 2023 data and 16% more compared to 2019, before the start of the health emergency that sadly paralyzed the world between 2020 and 2022.

The Undersecretary of Tourism, Verónica Pardo said that 2024 marked the definitive recovery of tourism in Chile, the data released by Sernatur, the National Tourism Service indicate that the good results were driven by December, the best month of the year and when more than 647.000 international tourists entered the country.

As for international arrivals these were led by Argentine visitors, up to 2.088.289, signing an increase of 73.2% compared to 2023 data, followed by Brazilians, a contingent that grew by 62% in 2024, compared to the previous period and added 787.036 visits, in what is Brazil's best performances since 2013.

Chilean tourism, an industry considered one of the country's economic engines, with a very varied offer in multiple segments and niches, accounts for about 3% of GDP and 7% of employment.

The National Director of Sernatur, Santiago Fernández, said that this increase is consistent with the International Tourism Promotion Plan 2023 – 2027 led by the organization and the strategy to recover pre – pandemic levels with an emphasis on key markets for the Chilean tourism sector.

The data point a recovery in markets outside Latin America, which have gained strength in 2024, Chinese tourists increased by 71.7% compared to 2023, Australian visitors grew by 34.8%, arrivals from the United States of America rose by 6.5%, tourists from Europe increased by 15.2% and totalled 440.380 visitors across all countries in that region.

With these achievements concerning incoming tourism, looking ahead for 2025, Chile expects to receive more than 2.2 million international visitors, in the current summer season that runs until the end of March.
