Porto Santo Island, the northermost and easternmost point of the Madeira archipelago in the North Atlantic only 500 kilometres from the African Coast and part of Portugal, characterized by its extensive beach with 9.0 kilometres of golden sand, delightful villages and challenging hiking trails on 1st February 2025 managed the application of tourist tax for visitors who stay overnight there.
The AHP, the Portuguese Association of Hotels has criticised this new tourist tax, pointing out that the revenue should be managed by a committee in which the hotel industry participates and that these revenues do not meet the current expenses of the Municipal council.
The Association of Hotels of Portugal has already published that the entity expresses in concern with the entiry not force on 1st February, of a tourist tax of €2.0 throughout the year in Porto Santo, a poorly thought – out and inappropriate decision.
The AHP stressed that this new tourist tax, without a clear strategy for its application and use, could harm the attractiveness of the destination, which already faces challenges such as air connectivity and seasonality and it is It is also highlighted that this tax application throughout the year, unlike what happens in practically all sun and beach destinations is profoundly wrong.
