Albufeira, Portugal | Project of a New Sports Centre for the Algarve with Ambition to Become the European City of Sports

Albufeira, the largest, liveliest and most exciting of all the resorts towns that line southern Portugal's beautiful Algarve coastline in the Faro district, a former fishing village that become a major holiday destination, with sandy beaches and a busy nightlife strip, boasting a modern marina, a relevant base for diving, water sports, boat trips and also dolphin - watching launched a project to develop a new Sport Centre for the Algarve with ambition to become the European City of Sports.

The project was presented at BTL, the Lisbon Tourism Exchange or Lisbon Travel Market, recognized by the tourism sector as the most important Tourism Fair in Portugal, the largest tourism networking platform in the country offering professionals the opportunity to gain in - depth knowledge of the national and international markets, a major plan to establish Albufeira as a global hub for sports activities.

This new Sports and Association Centre will be built on the north side of the Municipal Stadium and this complex will include a High - Performance Sport Centre for Gymnastic with changing room, an Athletics Support Centre and a 100 - seat auditorium.

 Another major focus of this macro project will be on associations, accommodating for meetings and sports clubs in Albufeira, and in addition, the stadium will be extended adding 350 more seats.

This ambition to become the European city of sports was highlighted by the mayor of the municipality José Carlos Rolo, who announced a contract worth about €4.0 million that will be launched soon, highlighting that the goal is for The Centre to be ready sometime in 2026, unlikely at the beginning of the year, and hoping that the centre becomes a reality as soon as possible.

Apart the presentation of the the project of the new Sports Centre for the Algarve, Albufeira's presence at BTL, also served as an opportunity for the municipality to begin the process of certification as a Sustainable certification, awarded by Biosphere.

This certification is achieved demonstrating a commitment to environmental, social and economic sustainability through policies and practices that align with global standards like those set by the GSCT, Global Sustainable Tourism Council.

The mayor of the Algarve city said that he wants to make a more detailed presentation in Albufeira so that everyone understands the work that will be done.
