Madrid, Spain's capital located in the central part of the Iberian Peninsula on the banks of the River Manzanares, the largest and most populous city of the country, highlighted by elegant boulevards, ample squares, manicured parks and a captivating architecture, well known for its rich repositories of European art in its emblematic museums, centre that with its busy activities in education, science and business contributes to its status as one of the world's leading global cities, is designing its new MICE tourism strategy.
MCB, the Governing Board of the Madrid Convention Bureau, specialist department of the public company Madrid Destino of the City Council of Madrid whose main goals are the promotion of the city as an ideal destination for holding all types of meetings, incentives, congresses and events tourism has presented the roadmap to design Madrid's new strategy in the MICE sector.
With the objective to strengthen the competitiveness of the Spanish capital in this ample tourism segment, the President of the MCB, the Councillor of the Madrid City Council, Almudena Maillo has presented the strategic analysis project, which will eighteen months and will identify growth opportunities for the city in the city.
It should be remembered that Madrid, in the last six consecutive has been named as the best destination in the world for meetings and congresses by the World Travel Awards achieving brilliant results thanks to an excellent presence of outstanding infrastructure, venues and high performances in organizing and planning events of international relevance.
The President of the MCB stressed that Madrid aspires to strengthen its leadership by positioning itself as an innovative destination with added value for the meetings and congress industry.
In this sense, the new strategy will prioritise attracting specialised events in strategic sectors for the city, such as Big Data, cybersecurity, Fintech, e - health and video games, with a solid collaboration between the public and private sectors as one of the keys to Madrid's leadership in the meetings, incentives, congresses and events activities.
In 2024 a change has been observed in the stay habits od MICE tourists in Madrid, with a 22.9% increase in overnight stays, which have gone from 4 to 7 nights, indicating that the attendees spend more time in the city, generating a greater economic impact.
According to the Councillor of the Madrid City Council, these data show that MICE tourism is growing in quality and profitability in the capital, encouraging spending on accommodation, catering, leisure and transport, which makes one the main economic engines of Madrid.
