Puerto Iguazú, a city in northeast Argentina, famous gateway to the stunning Iguazú Falls in Iguazú National Park, a paradise with hundreds of cascades, among them the iconic towering Garganta del Diablo sits in lush, wildlife - rich rainforest, northwest the three borderds landmarks overlooks the rivers where Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay meet is the country's first sustainable destinatio recognized with the Biosphere certification, and the second in all of Latin America, along with Rurrenabaqe Maddi Pampas in Bolivia.
The certification process began in December 2022 and had the support of the tourism companies, the commitment of Iturem, the Municipal Tourism Authority and Green Ecologist Foundation that actively coordinated tasks related to the SDGs in the social sphere, promoting regional economies and training local entrepreneurs and producers.
Puerto Iguazú achieved one of the most important awards in terms of sustainability and the environment, with which the tourist city was internationally recognized with the Biosphere Certification, part of the Transforming the Future program, an initiative carried out in Latin America through the alliance between Fundación Plan 21, Fundación Zurich, the Responsible Institute of Spain and Universal Assistance.
The aforementioned program seeks to transform tourist destinations with social and economic impact for local communities and the Biosphere methodology certification is based on contributing to the 17 SDGs of the 2030 Agenda.
The President of the Ente Mixto Iguazú Turismo, the Tourism Mixed Entity of Iguazú, Leopoldo Lucas, valued the importance of this milestone for the destination, highlighting that the environment is an issue that crosses us more and more, awareness and care to preserve the environment for future generations and the wonders of this world became of utmost importance. Iguazú is a destination that is not on the sidelines of this and in 2022 the site officially began this path by signing an agreement at FITUR Madris with Biosphere.
The merit of this prestigious achievement is the result a joint work between the public and private sectors, where efforts such as gender equality, care for water consumption, safety and hygiene and promoting management of health issues for the population stand out and without a doubt, a huge step for sustainable tourism.
