Chile | Articulating a Working Group to Improve the Management of National Parks

FEDETUR, the Federation of Tourism Companies of Chile for the lack of a tourism approach in the administration of national parks articulates a working group to improve the management of them.

The shortcomings in the management of these enclosures, notable resource of the South American country which boast 42 national parks covering a total area of 13.206.810 hectares, and the scant consideration of the tourism industry in the decision - making of the authorities in charge of protected wild areas motivated the Federation of Tourism Enterprises of Chile to request the Minister of Agriculture to articulate a working group to improve and strengthen governance in protected areas like the Chilean National Parks.

The Federation of Tourism Companies of Chile assumed the role of articulator concerning this initiative in partnership with the Undersecretary of Tourism, Sernatur, the National Tourism Service and government agency belonging to the Ministry of Economy, Development and Tourism, the Ministry of Agriculture and CONAF, the National Forest Corporation, a Chilean State - owned private non – profit organization contributiong to the development and sustainable management of the country’s forest resources.

The members of these bodies will meet once a month to address matters related to the administration of national parks, which have a direct impact on the development of tourist activity with the aim of improving aspects that are not working well and enhancing these natural areas elevating themselves as relevant resource of the Chilean heritage.

Some of the central issues that will be discussed in this work instance are :

•    The system of purchasing tickets to enter national parks
•    Access to protected wildlife areas
•    The setting and change of rates charged to tourists to enter these places
•    The measures to prevent fires in the summer season
•    The criteria to determine the closure of parks in case of fires or other issues

The executive President of FEDETUR, Mónica Zalaquett, who promoted the establishment of this cooperation, valued that the Ministry of Agriculture has been open to creating this instance, because it will allow the coordination of the different actors that have a direct relationship with the operation of the national parks, and working on those aspects necessary to improve the management and governance of these enclosures.

The Union Representative added that for the tourism industry it is essential that CONAF and those in charge of the administration of national parks always consider the variable of tourism in decision - making, because these impact the development of this economic sector that operates around protected wild areas.

Chile is a nature destination, and therefore the way in which these places are managed is key for the sector and for the entire tourism value chain.

The Head of FEDETUR added that there is confidence that this working group will be very beneficial for the country because it will allow, on the one hand, to strengthen the conservation of national parks and on the other, the development of tourism, a sector that contributes 640.000 jobs to the economic and social progress of the country and the communities.
