Indonesia | Set to Achieve a Record Year in International Tourism

Indonesia's tourism sector is experiencing s strong resurgence and is set to achieve a record year in international tourism by 2025, surpassing pre - pandemic levels and setting new benchmarks for the Southeast Asian region.

After record international visitor arrivals and increased spending in 2024, the country is actively working to further develop its tourism offerings, including sustainable tourism initiatives and the development of high value - experiences.

Projections for 2025 indicated continued growth with the sector expected to contribute significantly to the national economy and employment.

This success is attributed to a combination of factors including strategic government initiatives, infrastructure development with significant investments, visa policy reforms, promoting sustainable tourism practices and country's natural and cultural attractions.

Projections indicate that spending by international visitors will reach 344 trillion Indonesian rupiah by 2025, representing an increase of almost 12% compared to 2019 figures.

The country's continued expansion of hotel capacity, the development of new tourism destinations beyond Bali, and the commitment to sustainable tourism practices ensure that Indonesia is well-positioned in the region. This record performance will not only benefit Indonesia's economy, but will also cement the country as a top-tier global player in the tourism industry.

In addition, Indonesia is also seeing a strong recovery in domestic tourism and it was able to diversity its offering beyond traditional destinations attracting many national travellers, focusing on "10 new balls", a list of ten tourist destinations in the country that the Indonesian government is actively promoting as alternatives, intended to draw tourists to other parts of the archipelago and highlight the diverse attractions Indonesia has to offer  and promoting eco – friendly and cultural tourism.

This diversification also includes initiatives like developing community - based cultural experiences, wellness tourism, and digital nomad hubs. The goal is to attract a wider range of travellers and increase tourism revenue across the archipelago.

The recovery and growth of Indonesia's tourism sector is also founded on strategic leadership, solid investments and collaboration between the public and private sectors.

The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy has set out a clear and sustainable growth agenda, focused on community well - being and resilience. This collaborative approach has only attracted more visitors, but has also ensured that the economic benefits of tourism are spread across the country.
