Kenya | Travel and Tourism Sector Set to Inject a Remarkable Financial Support into National Economy this Year

Kenya, a country in East Africa, highlighted by unique landscapes in its interior encompassing lakelands, savannah, iconic wildlife, national parks, the dramatic Great Rift Valley and Highlands mountains, also highlighted by pristine beaches along a stunning coastline on the Indian Ocean and a vibrant culture through its travel and tourism sector is set to inject a remarkable financial support into national economy this year.

The African country is a very popular travel and tourism destination, drawing millions of tourists each year and its diverse attractions contribute significantly to the national economy.

Kenya Tourism Board and other stakeholders are implementing aggressive marketing campaigns, enhancing tourism products, and adopting digital platforms and beyond traditional wildlife safaris the country is diversifying its tourism offerings covering various segments with the aim to attract a wider range of visitors.

Kenya's travel and tourism sector is projected to contribute a record of KSh1.2 trillion to the national economy this year, according to new data released by WTTC, the World Travel & Tourism Council, the only global body representing the Travel & Tourism private sector and its numerous industries. 

This contribution marks a 24% increase on pre – pandemic levels in 2019 and accounts for over 7% country's GDP.

In addition, the sector is expected to support 1.7 million jobs, representing more than 8% of total national employment, maintaining its critical role in the national's economic landscape.

Domestic tourism is forecast to reach just under KSh560 billion, while international visitor spending is projected to hit over KSh300 billion, a 31% increase from 2019.

 The World Travel & Tourism Council attribites this growth to Kenya's diverse tourism offering, ranging from safari parks to coastal and cultural experiences, and another highlight is the continued infrastructure improvements.

Looking ahead, WTTC anticipates the tourism sector will contribute KSh1.8 trillion to the Kenyan economy by 2035 and support over 2.2 million jobs, underscoring its long - term potential for sustainable development and economic resilience positioning Kenya as a relevant player in the regional tourism landscape.
