Budapest, Hungary | Getting Closer to the Adriatic Coast as Croatia Finishes Motorway Link

Budapest, Hungary’s capital, the political, economic, and cultural centre of the country, among the ten largest cities in the European Union standing on the banks of the Danube River and strategically located at the centre of the Pannonia Basin, lying on ancient routes linking the hills of Transdanubia with the Great Hungarian Plain, a very popular and vibrant destination highlighted by a relevant cultural heritage, with its historic centre classified as a World Heritage Site due to its numerous notable monuments of classical architecture is getting closer to the Adriatic Coast as Croatia finishes motorway link.

After nearly 20 years of construction and an investment of €46 million, the final missing stretch of the motorway linking the Hungarian capital to the Adriatic coast will open this fall in Croatia, a key milestone in the long - planned expressway, a new connection that promises a faster and more convenient route for travellers from the Hungarian capital headed to the Croatian Adriatic Riviera,  cutting travel time to just two hours and eliminating traffic bottlenecks, according to the Hungarian business news portal Tőzsdefórum.

The new stretch links Hungary’s M6 motorway, a north south - route running along the Danube River connecting Budapest to the southern region of the country and the Croatian border and part of the European route E73 to Croatia’s A5 motorway that connects the cities of Osijek and Đakovo, near the Sredanci interchange of the A3 motorway,  a vital infrastructur in the Slavonia region.

The last stretch to be completed is a mere five kilometres connecting Beli Manastir, the principal town of the Croatian part of Baranja, located in the Osijek - Baranja County to the Hungarian border.

The short but vital section features eight new structures, including a viaduct, two overpasses and five bridges. The largest, the 318 - metre Karasica Viaduct, a huge structure on the Corridor VC Croatian motorway that spans both a river and a railway line. Authorities expect to complete their official opening procedures by September.

Hungary already completed its M6 sector to the Croatian border in 2024. However still work on the Bosnia’s Herzegovina’s portion and parts do not yet meet expressway standards. As of early 2025, approximately 138 kilometres of the planned 325 kilometres of the Adriatic motorway in Bosnia and Hercegovina have been completed.

As an example the Mostar North - Mostar South motorway segment, a key part of Corridor Vc in Bosnia and Hercegovina, aiming to improve connectivity and ease traffic around Mostar, a 13.8 kilometres section, also known as LOT 4, is particularly relevant for alleviating traffic congestion in this historical city, the administrative centre of Herzegovina – Neretva Canton.

This section runs between the Mostar North interchange near Kutilivač and the Mostat South interchange, connecting to the M6.1 road will also improve access to the southern regions of the country. The date of completion of this route should happen before 2028 and plans for the motorway full opening in Bosnia opening in Bosnia Hercegovina evoke 2030.

Once available this route, drivers could travel unitnterrumpted to the Adriatic along the corridor Vc project. Budapest would then have another direct link to Croatia culminating to the the port of Ploče, located on the Adriatic coast in Dalmatia just north of the Neretva Delta, and the natural seaside endpoint of most north - south routes through the central Dinaric Alps in the Dubrovnik - Neretva County through Osijek and Sarajevo, with a travel time reduced to 6/7 hours.
