The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), a specialized agency that leads international efforts to defeat hunger and improve nutrition and food security, supporting gender equality in the agricultural sectors leading various actions to raisr level of nutrition in local communities and improve agricultural productivity headquartered in Rome, Italy is supporting agrotourism development in Cuba.
A document points out that FAO is collaborating on issues related to agriculture and food in the Caribbean country and also on agricultural tourism, with an aid provided that promotes this facet of development, taking in consideration tourism represents a significant drive force of the Cuban economy.
FAO supports agrotourism in Cuba through projects that promote rural digitalization, increase income, and create jobs in family farming which includes agrotourism initiatives, focusing on improving agrifood systems by integrating digital tools and supporting farmers directly benefiting the development of agrotourism services and helping to make the sector more competitive and sustainable.
Innovation and technological advances are an essential element for the implementation of the Food Soverignty and Food Security Law (SSAN Law) that establishes the legislative framework with a view to achieving food sovereignty and guaranteeing the right of every person to healthy and adequate food and seeking sustainable food production.
Digital agriculture is therefore recognized as one of the priority programme areas in FAO’s Strategic Framework for the period 2022 - 2031 and is considered a key accelerator to meet the goals of the 2030 Agenda for Development, adopted by 193 UN member states at the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit which took place in New York, U.S. in 2015.
Cuba already adopted a Pilot Plan, a project that ran from December 22, 2021 to December 31, 2024 supporting the development of resilient and sustainable agricultural practises, which are also essential for attracting tourists interested in authentic rural experiences and five communities in the west and centre of the country participated and the selected communities that continue to be active are :
• Vista Hermosa in the Municipality of Guanabacoa - Havana Province
• Playa Larga, Soplillar amd Cayo Ramona from the Ciénaga municipality - Matanzas Province
• Jobo Rosado from the Yagajuay municipality - Sancti Spiritus Province
Outstanding are the achievements of the Finca Vista Hermosa Farm in the capital municipality of Guanabacoa, which began this experience in 2012 and is booming every year in terms of ecotourism and rurality, offering agricultural and livestock production, food service, nature experience and agrotourism.
The farm is currently one of the promoters of the Finca Slow project and is part of a shared program for Latin America and the Caribbean and it’s a agroecological farm that produces vegetables, milk, cheese and meat according to the principles of social and environmental sustainability.
Cuba, with FAO’s support is working to develop and submit new project proposals that specifically target agrotourism and agroecology, demonstrating a commitment to integrated rural development.
By helping farmers access digital tools and improve the promotion and sale of their services, FAO directly contributes to increasing household income and creating employment opportunities in Cuban rural areas through initiatives like agrotourism.
As summarized by the FAO, there capacities in Cuba both the public and private sectors to solve the challenges posed by the required process of digitalization of farms to contribute to increasing their efficiency and thus increase food production and correlated tourism activities.
