Dubai, UAE | Unveiled a Major Heritage Project to Boost Cultural Tourism in the Emirate

Dubai, city and Emirate in the UAE, the United Arab Emirates, located south of the Persian Gulf in the Arabian Peninsula, known for its ultramodern architecture, luxury shopping, a vibrant nightlife, with a robust economy relies on revenue from trade, tourism, aviation, real estate and financial service unveiled a major heritage project to boost cultural tourism in the Emirate.

Dubai Municipality has announced the completion of a significant heritage development project in the Deira Souks area in the Deira district, near Dubai Creek, famous for its markets, highlighted by the Gold Souk, Spice Souk, and Perfume Souk, offering a vibrant cultural shopping experience where visitors can find gold, jewelry, spices, textiles, fragrances and much more.

The upgrades served seven traditional markets, including the perfume, cookware, fabrics, and  furnishing souks as well as the gold market and the Al Ahmadiya area, located in Al Ras, the westernmost locality in the area of Deira that borders the Dubai Creek.

Public spaces and walkways have been refurbished with traditional materials such as locally sourced sarooj, and enhancements include wooden shade restorations, improved lighting, new signposts, and shaded seating areas. 

The initiative, part of the city’s broader urban and cultural preservation efforts aimed at  revitalising these historic sites spanning 1.784 metres with an investment of approximately $2.6 million safeguarding the historical character of the Emirate’s traditional markets, while enhancing the visitor experience, according to Emirate News Agency (WAM).

The project support over 500 shops
and integrates seamlessly with the Emirate’s strategy to preserve its cultural and architectural heritage also aligns with the goals of the “Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan,” which seeks to transform the city and Emirate into a world - leading, sustainable and liveable metropolis by optimizing land and infrastructure, developing vibrant and inclusive communities,  expanding green spaces and nature reserves, improving transport and preserving its cultural heritage to enhance the quality of life for its growing population.
