Ljubljana, Slovenia | Completed Taxiway J Upgrade Project to Improve Aircraft Manoeuvrability and Operational Efficiency at Jože Pučnik Airport

Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport, located near Brnik, 24 kilometres northwest of dowtown Ljubljana, and 9.5 kilometres from Kranj, at the foothills of Kamnik - Savinja Alps has completed the Taxiway J development, a €5.35 million upgrade project to improve the Manoeuvrability and Operational Efficiency for large aircraft.

The 170 - metre long, 30 - metre wide connector, which also included resurfarcing parts of Taxiway A, provides now a necessary turning area for the largest planes at the western threshold of runway 12 and is one of the biggest upgrades in its runway infrastructure in the last decade at Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport.

This investment by operator Fraport Slovenija strengthen the airport safety, competitiveness, and role as a modern regional aviation hub.

The upgrade project was carried out in stages from March 2024 and the new Taxiway J was opened in August 2025. This improvement provides a proper turning area for the largest aircraft, enhancing flexibility for movements between the apron and the runway.

This development aimed to improve the overall operational flow and efficiency of the airport, reinforcing the highest safety standards for airside operations.

In addition to new Taxiway J, the project involved renovating and resurfacing nearly 20.000 square metres of Taxiway A, and the new taxiway system offers now more space for the maintenance and airside surfaces.

The project also included the installation of approximately 35 kilometres of cabling and 59 LED lights for Taxiway J, along with ten new signs to clearly mark the new route.

The current investment cycle focuses on manoeuvring areas, a project to renovate and reorganize the airport apron is underway, to be completed by the end of 2026, and in the coming years investments will also be directed toward sustainable development.

Since 2014, more than €83 million has been invested in the airport, the biggest project being a new passenger terminal worth €21 million, which opened in 2021.

Ljubljana airport is gradually recovering after a prolonged slump caused first by the bankruptcy of flag carrier Adria Airways in 2019 and then by the Covid - 19 pandemy.

In 2024 Jože Pučnik Airport handled 1.438.713 passengers experiencing a strong growth with an increase of 13.3% on the previous year though still almost a fifth below pre - pandemic levels.

Growth continues this year, with numbers for January  through March showing the airport welcomed 525.742 travellers, up to 4.5% over the same period in 2024.

New airlines and routes are being added, such as KLM’s Amsterdam route continuing year - round, EasyJet is scheduled to commence Manchester - bound flights in November, Vueling is adding a Barcelona service the same month, and Air Baltic will start flying to Las Palmas, Gran Canaria in late October.
