IHG Hotels & Resorts, British multinational hospitality company headquartered in Windsor, Berkshire, England, UK has unveiled the development of a Regent resort in Karuizawa, a town in the mountains of Nagano Prefecture, approximately one hour from Tokyo by Shinkasen, well known for mild summers conductive to outdoor recreation like golf, cycling and walking paths along highlighted by attractions like Kumoba Pond, Shiraito Falls, and Kyu - Karuizawa, its lively town centre, famous for a bustling pedestrian shopping strip.
Karuizawa is a destination known for its natural beauty, and year - round attractions, including pristine forests, scenic waterfalls, ski resorts, golf courses and upscale shopping. The town has seen a 30% increase in inbound travel since 2019, highlighting its growing appeal to international travellers.
The Regent Karuizawa, set to open in 2028 will be the first Regent Property in Japan resort location, a development that is part of IHG Hotels & Resorts’ broader strategy to grow its luxury and upper luxury portfolio in the Japanese market.
Designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, the resort is a development which aims to cater to guests seeking a tranquil retreat, surrounded by a pristine nature and incorporating elements such as hot springs.
The property situated in a forested area with views of the majestic Mount Asana will feature 58 keys, offering a mix of rooms and villas.
The resort will feature various amenities, including multiple dining and bar options, a specialty restaurant with valley views, a spa, an onsen, a gym and meeting spaces, all facilities that are intended to provide a comprehensive experience for guests.
The establishment will enter into the Regent brand, well known to offer ultra - luxury hospitality, emphasizing sophisticated design, immersive culinary experiences through its “Taste Studio”, personalized service via the “Regent Experience Agent”, and unique local integrations.
Key features of the brand include innovative architecture with thoughtful design, serene spaces such as private pools and villas, gourmet dining, signature spas and wellness centres, and a focus on creating unique, aspirational experiences in iconic cities and resort destinations.
The Regent Karuizawa will join IHG’s existing Hotel Indigo Karuizawa in the Nagano Prefecture, expanding the company’s presence in the region.
