Kenya | Launched an Astro - Tourism Initiative, Capitalising on the Levels on Minimal Light Pollution and Wide Open Skies

The Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) has launched an astro - tourism initiative unveiled during a total lunar eclipse at a remote lodge in Samburu County, located in the former Rift Valley in northern Kenya stretching north from the Wuaso Ng’iro River to the South of Lake Turkana, where local communities, tourists, and government representatives gathered to to witness the celestial event.

Led by Kenya’s Kenya’s tourism ministry and the Kenya Space Agency, the initiative aims to promote astro - tourism as a visible addition to the country’s travel offerings.

Officials from the Kenya Space Agency described the project as a “game changer” for the tourism sector, which already accounts for nearly 10% of the nation’s GDP.

With interest growing globally in dark experiences, Kenya’s clear night skies and untapped stargazing potential, the country offers a new opportunity to attract more visitors beyond the country’s traditional wildlife and safari draws.

The Kenyan Tourism Board capitalising on the levels of minimal light pollution and wide open skies in Samburu County and other sites is providing curated packages around stargazing, astrophotography, guided night sky tours and cultural storytelling diversifying its offerings and aims to attract more eco - tourists and adventurers to live unique and memorable celestial experiences in one of Africa’s premier destinations.
