The Sultanate of Oman’s Tourism Development Company, Omran Group, organization founded in 2005 with the primary objective of fostering the sustainable growth of the national tourism sector by enhancing its infrastructure and creating authentic tourism assets, lifestyle communities and destinations to contribute to the diversification of the country’s economy has signed a strategic agreement with TUI Group, a German leading multinational leisure, travel and tourism company headquartered in Hanover, and trading on the Frankfurt and Hanover stock exchanges.
This long - term partnership aims to position the Sultanate of Oman as a leading sun - and beach destination. At the heart of the agreement is the construction and operation of a first cluster of five new hotels under TUI hotels brands, with the first could open as early as winter 2028 in the Dhofar Governorate, the largest of the 11 governorates in the country in terms of area, located in southern Oman on the eastern border with Yemen and southern border with Saudi’s Arabia’s Eastern Province.
Dhofar Governorate is well known to offer a unique year - round tourist experience, famous for its contrasting dry desert landscapes and a lush green coastal monsoon season that turns the mountain and coast into a vibrant natural spectacle. Historically this Omani Governorate has been a significant player in the ancient frankincense trade with its ancient ports like Al – Baleed and Sumhuram, now UNESCO World Heritage Sites highlighting Dhophar’s historical importance.
The agreement includes plans for Oman to become 1.4% strategic shareholder in TUI Group through the Omran Group, acquiring newly issued TUI Group shares with a three - year lock - up period in exchange for TUI’s 45% share in the Joint Venture.
As part of the partnership, Oman is contributing land and capital to a joint venture. Omran Group and TUI Group will hold 45% in JV and another private investor will hold 10%.
TUI Group will contribute expertise in hotel operations, travel distribution and local experiences, and all these projects are expected to generarte significant direct and indirect employment opportunities in Oman.
Minister of Heritage and Tourism of the Sultanate of Oman, Salem Mohammed Al Mahruqi said that this agreement represents a pivotal milestone in reinforcing Oman’s position on the global tourism map.
Oman is committed to developing world - class tourism destinations and experiences that not only attract a greater number of visitors, but also create high - quality employment opportunities.
TUI Group CEO Sebastian Ebel stated that with this partnership, the company is taking step towards establishing Oman as a successful holiday destination.
