Brazil has launched the 5th edition of its national action plan for the reduction of CO₂ Emissions in Civil Aviation with the integration of the Future Fuel Law (Law 14.993/24).
This law introduces the mandatory use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) lower - carbon alternatives to conventional jet fuel, produced from renewable and waste sources in the country, with domestic aviation operations that must incorporate 1% SAF by 2027, increasing to a minimum of 10% by 2037.
The plan that aligns with ICAO’s global climate goals for sustainable aviation was jointly developed by the National Civil Aviation Agency (Anac), the Department of Airspace Control (Decea) and the Secretariat of Civil Aviation.
This updated plan integrates SAF targets, technological innovation, operational improvements, and environmental programs to reduce the sector’s footprint while allowing for growth in demand reaffirming the South American country commitment to decarbonisation and sustainable advancement in the sector as reported by the Brazil’s Ministry of Ports and Airports.
According to the Brazilian government projections, while total greenhouse gas emission from aviation are expected to rise by 2035 due to sector expansion, the Emission Intensity Index is set to decline, signalling efficiency gains and a lower carbon footprint per passenger and cargo unit transported.
Brazil’s aviation sector has already demonstrated efficiency gains over the past two decades. The plan highlights the sector’s past success, showing that from 2003 to 2024, domestic fuel consumption increased by 2.4% annually, while Revenue Tonne - Kilometres (RTK), a measure of transport activity, grew by a faster 4.35% per year, leading to a significant drop in CO₂ emissions per RTK.
According to the source the new edition consolidates more than a decade of efforts, aligning national strategies with international climate commitments, and paving the way for long - term sustainability in Brazilian aviation.
