Botswana | Launching Strong Signals to Embed Tourism at Core of Sustainable Economic Growth

Botswana is actively working to enhance its tourism sector with various actions on shifting to a sustainable, high - value model to benefit local communities with infrastructure and services improvements, conservation of natural heritage, developing based cultural tourism, supporting eco - tourism, diversification of its offerings moving beyond trraditional safari and empowering women.

With these moves the African country is launching strong signals to embed tourism at core of sustainable economic growth, and used to announce a wide - ranging policy shift the NextGen Tourism Business Expo which took place from 2nd to 3rd Ocotber in Gaborone, an event that saw visionaries and changemakers to engage in conversations aimed at redefining the tourism sector, unlocking new business opportunities, and fostering inclusive growth.

Speaking at the event, Botswana Tourism Organization Acting CEO Justice Ofenttse outlined recovery figures showing 1.183.432 international arrivals in 2023 with 2025 on track to surpass pre – pandemic levels.

Long - haul markets including France, Germany and the U.S. have returned strongly, while newer markets such as China, India, and the Gulf states are being actively targeted.

To build on this growth the African country aims to prioritise four areas :

•    Product and market diversification.
•    Visa reform.
•    Improved air connectivity.
•    Sharper destination marketing.

The NextGen Tourism Business Expo also highlighted Botswana’s plans to grow the business events sector as a way to distribute tourism benefits more evenly.

Improved access and bolder promotion are expected to widen the opportunity for both local operators and international tour planners, with Botswana elevating itself as a key destination within multi - country African itineraries.
