Brazil, the largest and most populous country in Latin and South America has been recognised as one of the world’s ten leading tourism economies in terms of job creation, with the sector forecast to generate more than 8.2 million jobs by 2025, according to an international ranking of tourism employment and representing nearly 8% of total employment in the country as reported by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC).
The ranking positions the South American country as a powerhouse for job creation with the Ministry of Tourism highlighting that the industry is a strategic force for job and income generation, contributing significantly to the national economy through various segments, including accommodation, food services, and arts and culture.
The report places Brazil ahead of major global tourism destinations, just behind countries like China, India, Indonesia, the Philippines and Thailand.
According to Brazil’s Minister of Tourism Celso Sabino the ranking reflects a renewed international confidence in Brazil’s tourism sector which has been strengthened by government policies aimed at boosting investment and competitiveness and foster responsible, inclusive growth across various regions.
The Minister also highlighted that the findings reinforce Brazil’s position as a sustainable and strategic destination on the global stage, adding that the Ministry of Tourism is working to ensure that growth in the sector continues responsibly, promoting Brazilian destinations, cultural heritage and environmental preservation.
Various initiatives are in place such as to train students to develop the future worforce, entrepreneurs and tourism professionals to create a more competitive and service - ready industry. In addition there is a focus on inclusive growth, with efforts to integrate low - income women into the tourism economy and support women entrepreneurs.
The country is actively working to enhance cultural events like Parárraiá festival and others that are used to boost the creative economy and generate jobs and income.
The indicators of the ranking also highlighted that Brazil’s tourism growth will remain strong over the next decade. The country projected to be the ninth - largest creator of new tourism jobs between 2025 and 2035, adding over 1.5 million positions with the total number of supported job reaching 9.7 million in a decade.
The report also forecasts that the tourism sector will contribute around US$167.6 billion to Brazil GDP in 2025 and attract an estimated US$20 billion in capital investment by 2026.
