Guatemala | Taking Advantage of its Sustainable Tourism Expansion to Consolidate itself as a Competitive Destination

Guatemala is strategically expanding its sustainable tourism sector by updating its Sustainable Tourism Master Plan, investing in new a regional tourism routes, and developing eco - tourism projects, efforts which aim to create economic benefits for local communities, preserve cultural and natural heritage, and attract tourists with sustainable practices, which align with a global trend of travellers seeking responsible and eco - friendly experiences.

The Guatemalan Agency of Exporters (Agexport) seeks today to take advantage of the expansion of sustainable tourism in the Central American country, whose latest statistics reflect a sustained growth in the entry of visitors.

Between January and August of the current year, the sector generated $10.692 billion, with an increase of 7.9% against 2024, according to the entity, which highlighted Central America, he United States and Europe among the leaders in the sending of travellers.

These indicators reinforce the role od sustainable tourism in the country that offers authentic and responsible experiences, a high potential for job creation, investment attraction and an international promotion of the country as a competitive destination in Central and Latin America. 

To highlight all that and more Agexport organized the “Foro Viajes GT 2025”, GT Travel Forum that will take place on 28th October 2025 at the Infinia Event Center located at 15 Avenida 14 -72, Zona 13  in the capital of the country, Guatemala City as confirmed by the President of the Board of Directors of the Commission in charge of the sector, Diego Fernández.

The event aims to connect sustainability, innovation, and development in Guatemala tourism sector, addressing the demands of tourists and the role of small and medium - sizes enterprises (SMEs) in the country. 

This forum seeks to provide a space for discussions, learning about current tourism trends and will bring together local and international leaders to discuss how to transform strategies into concrete actions that promote the different destinations towards 2036.

The day will include conferences, panels, and networking spaces, focused on the main challenges and opportunities of sustainable tourism.

Among the international speakers are Camilo Makon from Argentina and Antonio Santos from the Tourism & Society Think Tank Valle, from Spain, who will share experiences on innovation, governance and sustainability in industry destinations without chimney.

According to the organizers, one of the key moments of the event will be the discussion : “From strategy to action – The Engine that will advance the master plan” moderated by Hugo Maul.

The General Director of Agexport, Amador Carballido explained that the forum is a platform for connection, inspiration and action, in which alliances are generated, good practices are shared and the sustainable development of Guatemala tourism is promoted.
