The expansion and modernisation of Pemba Airport also known as Karume Airport or Wawi Airport located in the Zanzibar archipelago on Pemba Island, Tanzania approximately 7 kilometres southeast of Chake - Chake, the capital of the island has officially broken ground with the Spanish firm Propay as the main contractor, marking a significant infrastructure upgrade for the archipelago’s transport network.
The project involves constructing a new passenger terminal, extending the runway from 500 metres to 2.4 kilometres , and upgrading other infrastructure like the apron and taxiways to enable direct landings of larger aircraft, and improving the main access roads.
With an estimated investment of US$263.3 million from the Zanzibar’s Ministry of infrastructure, the development is set for completion within three years.
Once operational the upgraded airport will enhance connectivity to international markets and triple its current domestic capacity to accommodate up to 330.000 passengers annually, supporting Zanzibar’s growing tourism sector.
The expansion of the airport represents a major infrastructure development aimed at improving connectivity, unlock the island’s economic potential, boost tourism and air cargo capacity.
