Água Hotels Group, a Portuguese hotel chain based in Carvoeiro, a town in the municipality of Lagoa, Algarve, managing multiple properties in Portugal and one in Cape Verde, a group focuses on offering a mix of hospitality, spa services and resorts is investing €7 million to develop a new four - star hotel in Vila Real, the capital and largest city of the Vila Real District in the heart of the North region, Portugal, also the seat of the Douro intermunicipal community and the Trás -os - Montes e Alto Douro historical province.
Vila Real is a must - visit destination for wine enthusiasts, history lovers, and nature seekers, a picturesque centre with a rich cultural and historical heritage and a perfect gateway to the stunning Douro Valley, famed for its terraced vineyards, and world - class wine cellars.
The hotel group will transform the former diocesan seminary of Vila Real, dating from 1930 in a four - star hotel, the works are expected to start in 2026, with the inauguration scheduled a year and a half after the start of construction.
The project, designed by architect Emanuel Cardoso, from Barracinza, has already been approved by the Vila Real City Council and will be a hotel featuring 80 accommodation units, a restaurant, a wine bar, spa and meeting rooms, aimed at both leisure and wellness tourism, as well as the meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE) segment and expected to created about 40 direct jobs.
Currently Água Hotels with six units in operation, five in Portugal and one in Cape Verde intends to reinforce its commitment to project with regional impact, focused on urban rehabilitation and heritage enhancement.
In a press release the group’s management stressed that the objective is to offer a differentiated product, in a building with soul and history, with services adjusted to the growing dynamism of the city and the region and the choice of Vila Real is strategic to consolidate an articulated regional offer.
