Chile has started a relevant rail link development that will significantly reduce travel times in the Santiago region, a project that is part of the "Chile on Rails" program intended to modernize the country's rail network.
The President of Chile, Gabriel Boric authorised the beginning of construction of the Alameda - Melipilla rail link, a key work that will transform mobility in the most populous area of the South American country.
With an investiment of more than $1.9 billion, the project will connect eight communes and will directly benefit more than 1.7 million inhabitants, according to information released by El Maipo, media outlet for the Maipo territory, serving the municipalities of the Cordillera, Maipo, Talagante, Melipilla, and San Antonio provinces.
The development includes 61 kilometres of extension, 11 stations, serving the municipalites of Estación Central, Cerrillos, Maipú, Padre Hurtado, Peñaflor, Talagante, El Monte, and Melipilla and connection with lines 1 and 6 of the Metro of Santiago.
The project also includes a fleet of 22 new, fully electric trains manufactured by CRRC, a Chinese state – owned company based in Beijing, a service which will provide a fast and sustainable transport option for hundreds of thousands of people.
Once in operation in 2029, this rail link will reduce the journey between Santiago and Melipilla from two hours to just 46 minutes, significantly improving the quality of life for many residents.
It is estimated that the system will mobilize 60 million passengers per year, bringing territorial equity, economic growth and new job opportunities in the area.
